Default Newbie Map Issues

Hi,

I got my first BlackBerry yesterday, an 8320 and am very pleased with it apart from map problems. It didn't come with BB Maps installed and so I went for Google Maps, all downloaded and installed but when I try to run it the device locks up and the only way I seem to be able to fix it is taking the battery out.

I then download BB Maps from the BB website and that is all installed however when I run the app all I get are diagonal black lines in boxes with a little target circle in each top left hand corner.

Any thoughts would be great, thanks,

Dan

You may be low on memory.

Menu>options>Status (What is your file free) If it's less that 12mb then you should review this thread and try it again after freeing some space.

Looks like I have about 17MB free (17614284 bytes), if my rounding's right!

Dan,

Did you review the post above on Memory? Start with a battery pull and see if it clears. If not then free some memory up and I am guessing that you will be good to go!

Hi all,

I've got a feeling there might be some kind of fault when used over Wi-Fi. I tested it this morning (BB maps this is) and it worked fine over GPRS. However, I've just got into work and set myself up on the wireless, seems fine, the Wi-Fi logo is solid, UMA appears in the top right and I have a local IP however when trying a completely different location I get the following:

"A network error was encountered. Check your server settings."

The browser seems to be working fine, Wi-Fi is in the top right corner so I assume this is the connection being used by the browser.

On a side note although I suspect it is related, GTalk works fine on GPRS as well however again on the Wi-Fi I get the error:

"Service not enabled for this handheld."

I did the battery pull as well and it cleared up the problem for BB maps but I'd already removed Google maps, I'll test that when these other problems are out of the way.

Thanks for all the help,

Dan

Work was a little quiet earlier so I went fiddling, looking for settings etc and came across the network diagnostics test, in particular I thought this looked strange:

Wi-Fi
Current Profile: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
SSID: xxxxxxxxx
AP MAC Address: 00:16:B6:9D:6E:00
Security Type: Open
Local IP Address: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
Signal Level: -90 dBm
Connection Data Rate: 48 Mbps
Status: Network acquired

VPN
Current Profile:
Concentrator Address:
Contact: N/A
Authentication: Error
Secure Device IP:
Status: Error: VPN profile is not found.

UMA
Connection Pref.: Wi-Fi Preferred
UMA Wi-Fi Available: Successful
Connection: Error
Error Code:
Status: UTC channel activation failed:

BlackBerry Infrastructure
Connecting: Error
Authenticating router: N/A
Authenticating server: N/A

I take it there is a fault with the UMA?

Thanks for reading,

Dan

Dan, I take it your UMA is actually reading as uma (i.e. lowecase)?

I can't see how GPS will work on WiFi. You need to be able to get the GPS signal OTA, not via WiFi or a dataplan. The dataplan comes in because you need that to download the maps as you move.

You need to be outside with a clear view of the sky to get a good GPS fix, especially for the first time.

Am I missing something?
