Default Corporate Tracking with GPS?

Please Login to Remove!

Really quick, our company is having sales meetings this week and while were in the meetings, they asked everyone to turn their Blackberry's in, so they could "update to the new corporate email addresses"? No biggie, or so we thought.

At dinner earlier tonight, someone mentioned that a friend of theirs in IS, mentioned they were actually turning on the GPS functions, so corporate can track all of us salesmen. To verify that we're actually going where we say we're going.

My questions are:

1. Can they actually do this?
2. Is there a way to verify that the GPS has indeed been turned on?

Thanks in advance for your help.

1. Yes.

2. Yes. Options > GPS.

If it is a corporate BB, you probably won't want to "undo" anything they did (like disable the GPS). It is their BB, you are on their time, and it is all completely legal.

Good luck.

Hadn't planned on undoing anything, just wanted to see if they had indeed turned it on. Looked under options and don't see GPS listed. Any other place to look?

Sorry, Options > Advanced > GPS.

The GPS was probably already on anyway, seeing where you have the 8310 with built in GPS. They were likely just loading the "Black Helicopter Stealth Mode" software, so they could remotely cloak you should the need arise.

Good luck.

Last question, then I'm headed to bed. Is there a way to tell if they did indeed load this software?

What software, a GPS tracking application? Look at a couple of places:

Press Alt + Escape (the key right of the trackball) will show you the running process. Scroll through them and see what is running. Also, Options > Advanced > Applications. See if you notice anything odd there.

This tracking process is being used more and more by companies to track their employees while on the job. (of course they could also track their equipment during non busoness hours as well) Some companies have installed tracking devices in their company onwned vehicles as well. As J Sanders said, this practice is completely legal on company owned equipment.
If privacy is a concern, your only option would be to get a personal phone/BB for use when on your personal time.

Some delivery companies even monitor how long a delivery vehicle is stopped at a location for a delivery.

Various vendors offer this application for employers. It is not something automatically a part of your BES.

Don't they legally have to tell you if it is not in your contract already?

I don't think so.

I have a similar system in use, I give my BB to my 17 year old daughter...did you ever see that Hulk Hogan episode where he watches his daughter go one place and she says she is somewhere else? The BB w/GPS is great, I returned my $500 Garmin GPS within days of buying the Curve 8310.

My friend forgot about this feature (which he was told about) and slacked off at the beach one day. His boss called and said he was making sure he didn't drown in the ocean.

Unless you do a ton of travelling, I see no reason to have a Navi unit. I don't even have GPS on my Curve, but Google Maps is all I need.

Yes, GMaps are great, I have to use the street view when driving for it to keep updating...otherwise I get "loading data" images until I get to a major intersection.
