Default Intrnational Dial codes in address book

As I travel throughout many parts of Europe I like to store phone numbers in international format, ie +44123456789 as against 0123456789, but it appears that this is not possible in the phone number fields in address book, despite the help file suggesting to hold down the 0 key. When I try that I get a whole field of 0s. Help!

Press the letter O key (not the number zero) when you're in the phone number field.
