Default Download Google Maps 2.1.0 on a BB 8310 can't find my location - 05-01-2008, 06:06 PM

Is kind off weird because I know my unit has obviously had GPS and Version 2.1.0 of Google Maps is missing this for some reason, does anybody know what's up and I did go to permissions and allow access to gps, I think it says location. The link is below

Wirelessly posted

This app doesn't work correctly on my 8320, but I am running 4.5.0.18, I suspect that is the issue

Yeah, same - well, actually my GMaps icon is the DOS cmd line icon.

I haven't been able to pinpoint My Location all day.

Other than that, the program works fine.

Is there a way to downgrade

Mine doesn't work either, but that's cause I'm inside the house, in the basement. I don't expect it to work through many concrete walls...

Worked fine for me on the 8330. Just won't pick-up the GPS signal from the device (same issue with 2.0.3). Seems a bit snappier though, the older version was incredibly slow with the My Location feature enabled.

Downloaded the .alx file loading through Desktop Manager but I'm getting an error that "no additional applications designed for your device were found". Guess they haven't updated the software at:

Mobile

yet for sideloading?

For some reason, the "My Location" feature hasn't been working on my 8320 either. It just says that it's unavailable, which is weird because I had no issues with it a month ago.

This happens because their server misinterprets your OS version of 4.5 and gives you the version of GMM for BB OS 4.0 which is pre-GPS support. Just use this URL on your device to get the right one:

http://www.google.com/gmm/apps/v2.1....GoogleMaps.jad

Thanks for the URL. To save some of my data overhead, I download the .jad file, got the URL to the actual .jar file, then popped it over the USB cable and am installing from the memory card.

Cheers.

Default Google Maps 2.1.0 - 05-06-2008, 07:30 PM

Has anyone been able to get the Google Maps 2.1.0 to recognize the internal GPS on an 8330? I downloaded the version at the posted link and it does not recognize the internal GPS as it continue to default to cellular triangulation.

Same here. Thanks jeremy, but that version still doesn't work with the GPS on the 8330.

Google's system doesn't recognize some "newer" browsers. When you download the app you'll notice it says "Download Google Maps 2.1.0 on your Blackberry 40" (or something similar.) You'll need to change the download link. If you copy the link address and change the "40" in the link to "42" (there are two instances in the link) you'll get the right download for your device and you'll get the right icon and possibly everything else will function for you.

There are also issues with OS 4.5 on BES 4.1.3 and some 4.1.4 where permissions can't be set properly.

Code for 4.0 devices (I assume)
HTML Code:
http://www.google.com/gmm/apps/v2.1.0/L1/BlackBerry-40/GoogleMaps.jad?make=BlackBerry&model=40&ver=v2.1.0
Code for 4.1 devices (I assume)
HTML Code:
http://www.google.com/gmm/apps/v2.1.0/L1/BlackBerry-41/GoogleMaps.jad?make=BlackBerry&model=41&ver=v2.1.0
Code for 4.2 and up devices (I assume)
HTML Code:
http://www.google.com/gmm/apps/v2.1.0/L1/BlackBerry-42/GoogleMaps.jad?make=BlackBerry&model=42&ver=v2.1.0

No problems here with the curve 8310, maybe something to do with me still running handset code 4.2.2.163.

Finds location within 30 sec of app launching, very quick

You are a king, JC

Btw, does acquiring the correct "Icon'd" GMaps offer anymore functionality? Despite the dos icon the app worked absolutely fine.

Thanks

That may be because the CDMA carrier is locking down the GPS functionality to a revenue-generating app. I understand that Verizon does this..

It's possible, but BMaps works fine and Bell Mobility is not known to lock down features like Verizon. Hopefully it's not the case.

How can I tell if Google Maps (version 2.0.3) on my 8310 is using the internal GPS or the cellular triangulation?

If there is a shaded circle around the location then it's cell triangulation. GPS is just the dot (and it flashes too, I think.)

...it should be pretty apparent from the margin of error indicated as well. "My approximate location to within 1500 meters" vs "My approximate location to within 3 meters" is a significant (at least 2 orders of magnitude) difference.

On GPS-equipped BB's it will switch to triangulation if the GPS receiver can't get a lock -- in case you're wondering why it triangulates on your 8310 when you're testing it indoors.

Your right the flashing blue dot is the within 3 meters and also like a blue triangle showing the direction of travel, at least that what shows up on mine. It works fine on both my 8820 and 8310. My two cents.

Yeah, it works fine on other Curves, it's just the new 8330 that has the problem (regardless of carrier, probably won't work on Verizon at all).

Bumping this thread because I'm travelling in France and I'm only getting the cellular triangulation, not the GPS (approximate location to within 1,700 meters). I'm standing outside under clear blue skies. I don't see why it wouldn't default to the GPS even over here, since regular GPS works (in cars, etc.).

Does anybody know how I can get it to use GPS, since 1,700 meters can be 10 blocks away?

My main problem with all these GPS apps is although it will track your location, there are still no voice directions and it won't automatically change the on screen directions according to where you are. LiveSearch, Gmaps, BBmaps, they all do the same thing. If the first instruction is "Depart Wood Creek Drive", it will say that all the way to my destination unless I manually bring up the next direction, and to me, that defeats the purpose of tracking all together.

And I'm still getting cell triangulation using the instructions in this post. I see no option for tracking.

Not stable for my device. It can locate my position accurately yesterday. But it located me in the sea, 10KM far way from me today.
And I did not find the navigation in the menu. Do you guys have it?
