I recently purchased a 8320 Curve from craigslist and notice that everytime I bootup it shows the message " Engineering use only, not for sale or lease ". The guy who i bought it from did say that this is directly from the factory and its unbranded, but Im wondering if this device sends some sort of information back to RIM. Also this phone is having the occasional reboot during a call.

Any suggestions?

Hi, the device is a sample device that RIM gives to the carrier only for evaluation purposes. The person who sold it to you got the device illegally.

Not necessarily got it illegally... but rather sold it illegally.

You might try upgrading the OS to help fix the reboot issues; but I'm sure you realize that phone was illegally sold to you as the penguin indicated.

Didndt know it was illegal but then again any phone you purchase online can be stolen also.

I just updated to the latest OS but didnt do a restore of my backup yet to see in case that was causing it in case as the backup came from a 8700. Also im noticing now that the Vibrate profile doesnt vibrate on new messages even though it is selected to do so......weird

Absolutely, which is why you should know a little about who you're buying from.

Well if the software update works this device doesnt transfer any data back to RIM or something then i would be happy with it. Or else i have to call him back and ask him to refund the cash

reloading the os should do that for you.

I also purchased an engineering use only model of the 8320, I was deliberately looking for an unbranded model as I do not live in the united states or Canada. I've since upgraded to .184 and have had no problems with one exception.

My gmail filters....I keep getting my sent gmail messages appearing in my inbox and the steps i've found outlined keep referencing email filters. one problem, the option doesn't exist, or isn't where it is on the regular berry and this problem is really beginning to get to me.

any suggestions?

you'll need to edit that in your BIS acc. you'll have to make a filter & select "from" & then add your gmail address to it... then check "do not forward..."
