Question Address Book sort quirk??

Please Login to Remove!

Hey folks,

I haven't come across this before and it's driving me nuts.

I have my address book sorted by last name, and until recently it's been working fine. I added a new entry the other day and it shows up twice... once where it's supposed to be, and once at the very top of the listing. I've confirmed they are the same record by adding an 'x' to the beginning of the last name. Both entries change.

Example:

Smith, John *
Adams, Bob
Clinton, Bill
Jobs, Steve
Smith, John *
Winchester, Charles

I have deleted and re-entered the entry, no success.
I have pulled the batter (while powered on), no success.
I have added other entries since, they appear fine.

There doesn't seem to be anything special about this entry, no special characters in the name, the entry wasn't imported (entered on Berry).

I'm out of ideas.... Thoughts?

Device: 8310 Curve
Carrier: Rogers Wireless
Firmware: v4.2.2.163 (Platform 2.5.0.24)

Any help would be appreciated.

Bump?
Surely someone has had this problem before?

John, welcome to the BBForums.

I read your post the day you posted it, and was just as bumfuzzled about it then as now. The only things I can think are:
1) are you on a BES corporate server? Is there some duplication taking off the BES
2) do you ahve any filters set (Address Book > Menu > Filters)?

Thanks for the welcome...

1) I am using BIS. GMail, so no syncing with contacts.
2) Nope. Business and Personal both unchecked.

Thanks for the effort... glad to know I only have issues that stump people.

Well, my first thought was actually to troubleshoot this by using a different name for the entry (silly, eh). I know you said you deleted the entry complete, and reentered it. So do it again, delete it, reboot the BB (pull the battery while powered on... etc.). Then add the entry yet again, but under a psuedonym (rather John Smith, try Sally Doe), and let's see what happens.

Perhaps if it does NOT cause the double entry, you can then edit that entry to the correct name.

Worth the try, I think.

And--think very positive thoughts while you do this.

Question

I think you were on the right track. I did as you suggested and it seemed to work. However; now at the top of my address book, I have "* No Addresses*" followed by all of my addresses.

I think what is happening is both my phone AND SIM listings are being displayed - can't find an option to disable that. I'm assuming with my previous issue, "Smith, John" may have been in both locations at the same time - and sync'd? Can't figure that one out.

So now I have nothing in my SIM and everything in my phone.

Two questions:
1) Should it all be in the SIM. Aside from the benefit of portability, are there any other pros/cons with going with the SIM?
2) If I keep everything on the phone, how do I get rid of "* No Addresses *" in front of 300 address book entries.

As I mentioned, my contacts aren't being replicated anywhere as I use GMail through the BIS.

Or should I leave well enough alone? lol

pfftttt....! yes that is is a SIM duplication. I "could" have thought of that, I have seen it before now that you mention it (on my own BB a few years ago).

1) a. Use the BB AddressBook, exclusively. Move all from the SIM to the AddressBook, you can do so in one fell swoop while in a the Address Book > SIM contacts > Copy all to Address Book.
b. For portability: Use Desktop Manager and Outlook to sync your contacts to your PC, and Desktop Manager > Backup, to backup your device.
c. Advantages: Your BB Address Book allows for a contact name with addresses, email, multiple phones, etc., and the SIM card allows one name with one phone number. So you have multiple entries for Joe cell, Joe work, Joe Home, etc., in the SIM. In the BB Address Book, you will have ONE Joe Smith, with all the data within that contact.
2) Delete them, one by one, or sync with Outlook and delete them there, and synch back.

I spoke too soon.

I verified my SIM is empty, and added a few more contacts. 2 worked fine... the 3rd is a duplicate again. ARGH!!!!! Back to square one.

I miss the days of analog TDMA phones.

I just don't understand this... never see it before except as you mentioned as a SIM duplication in the Address Book.

Thanks for your help anyway. I'll probably do the Outlook thing as you suggest anyway. Good to have a copy on another machine. Until then, I await v4.5 and hope it's a bug that gets fixed.

Default * No Addresses * solution

I just upgraded to 8310, and had the same issue after I copied my contacts from SIM to Address book. The quick solution is to wipe the unit (you loose all the data ofcourse) and start fresh. It worked for me and since I just upgraded it, it wasn't a big issue for me to wipe the data. Hope this helps!

My wife just got an 8310 and is experiencing some problems with the address book. She has all her contacts on the SIM card and goes through the copy all process to copy them to the address book. It looks like it's doing it and shows the status bar, but when it's done, her address book is empty. Even if she manually enters them into the address book, they don't show up. Now if she presses a letter key like 'B' all the contacts with the first letter 'B' show up, so they are in the phone somewhere, but not in her address book. She also uses the BES and her business contacts are all there. Finally, the guys at AT&T couldn't figure it out either and gave her a new phone, same problem. What are we missing????? Thanks for your help.

Address Book > Filters. UNcheck any that are checked.

With ALL filters UNchecked, do any show? If still no, they probably are still on the SIM.
