Default Are There Blackberry Desktop Tools? - 05-21-2008, 12:39 PM

I purchased a Blackberry Curve last week to replace both an old Verizon mobile phone and an old Palm m500 handheld device. I like the Blackberry, but Palm had a PC-based desktop program with a really nice calendar application and other apps as well - task list, memos, expense report, and note pad. These could all be synchronized between the PC and the handheld. I entered most of the data for these apps on the PC, especially calendar info, and then transferred it to the Palm. I've installed the Blackberry Desktop Manager, but it doesn't seem to have any of these apps that run on the PC. Am I missing something or aren't they there?

the Desktop Manager syncs with other organizer programs. Outlook being the more widely used. You can input all your information into outlook then configure DM to put it on the device.

I have never used it, but if you still have the other phone, you can try the Switch Device Wizard on the Blackberry Desktop Manager.

Or the application that you were using should have something similar.

I'm out of luck on that one - bought the Home & Student version of Office that includes Word, Excel and PowerPoint but not Outlook. I wonder if the BB might synch with Windows Calendar, which comes with Vista. Will look into that.

You can try and import your data to Google Calendar and then see if it will export it to your Blackberry. I know there are some people out there that use it. Just not sure if the import/export will work in your case, but its worth a shot.

Interesting reference, since I've just been googling with keywords blackberry synchronize calendar and have seen lots of glowing reports of Google Calendar synching with Blackberry. Maybe that's the calendar I should start using.

To save some $ you can buy an older version of Outlook: I use v2002, which works like a charm and syncs perfectly w/my Curve.

There are online sellers that sell older apps @ very reasonable prices.

The trial versions of 2003 Office sometimes came with Outlook but they expire after 90 days and the Full purchase version does not come with it. In fact you have to get the Small Business version or higher to get Outlook in the Office package. We finally bought 2007 Outlook seperate because I found I could not live without it..lol. And now that I have a BB it synchs and I am in love with having my calender in my pocket 24/7.
