Default Data Usage Worries

Please Login to Remove!

Ok so sorry first off if this info is available somewhere on the site, I've had a look, done searches & searched online, but am actually struggling to get a straight answer.

I just wana make sure I don't go over my data usage limit & get charged extra, even though I was told once that o2 won't charge you for going over your usage, just let you know, I'd still rather be sasfe than sorry.

I'm not 100% sure, I think the monthly fair usage policy is like 200MB but I was wondering if anyone here could give me a rough estimate of how much data my blackberry could gobble in a month, if say I had 2 or 3 messengers constantly connected. I guess I'm mostly just wondering if a messenger uses a lot or any data when connected, but not actually chatting...

It will use data even if you keep it signed on. The reason for this is that it'll monitor sign in's/out's of your contact list. If you have about 200 or so contacts and most of 'em like go in/out of their accts, that would be a lot. I have asked the guys from JiveTalk before and if you have 50 or so contacts, and just stay on 24/7 then we're talking about 3-4MB or at least 5MB.

My bet is that you should be okay with O2's 200MB unlimited promo.

EDIT: I've read one of John Clark's post around here with regards to data usage on JiveTalk using Minimoni. You may want to search on that... Good luck!

Hi

I am on o2 and you are correct that the useage allowance is 200mb.

My use averages only 50mb a month & the most I have used is 80mb.

I email and pin message a lot plus browse the internet for hours most days.

If you have an online o2 account you can check your usage under recent charges. Believe me you can do a lot with 200mb!

I also have a small application called mini moni which monitors data.

Opera mini with o2 mobileweb settings is not covered in the allowance so if you have that you would be charged an extra 1 per mb.

Hope that helps

I am a very heavy data user. JiveTalk, BB Messenger, Email and a lot of web. I use 6MB a day or 180MB a month. I would guess with your usage you would come no where near that.

Even if you aint chating, as long as you are signed in the messenger will use data. The page reloads everytime somebody on your list sends you a message or signs in/out, which should eat up that 200mb fast. I would reccomend an unlimited data plan because you will never have to worry about going over your limit because there will not be one. Also, with an unlimited plan you have unlimited acess to internet, email, mms, ect.

Install mini monitor. it tracks all your data usage. It works great for me, Data plans in canada are crap, 4 mb/month and 10 $ for each additional MB. In mini turn on the traffic Watch option and u can see how much each app or action takes up and they even have a limit watch.

Yeah well actually that is the unlimited data plan, but the fair usage policy says that the unlimited data plan shouldn't really go over 200mb, which I think is just absurd. Although I'm trying not to complain, from what I've seen, it's more than the other 'unlimited' data plans get.
