Default GPS, data - 06-04-2008, 01:59 AM

Hi, um, been a long time reader..but have never had to post, everyone's helpful and info is everywhere..but i searched the faq for this and couldn't find an answer..

my question is...if in the camera settings i enable geotagging..
will that solely use the gps...or will it use data?

im currently not on a BB data plan, so I'd like to know whether enabling this option and avoid extra charges...

thanks in advance =]

oh okay, see i thought i'd be solely the gps since it doesnt need to load any google map squares for example, it's just getting coordinates as far as i can tell.. but then again i dont know exactly how the geotagging works

I don't believe the geotagging itself touches data. Viewing those locations in BBMaps or such, would require data.

GPS itself, fixing your location, does not use your data package. However all you get from that is a GPS location/lat-long, etc. If you want to view where you are on a map, data needs to flow.

So you were mostly correct.

If you want full use of GPS, it's very data intensive.

You should actually determine if the GPS-enabled app you're using requires data. I suspect that for geocaching/tagging that only the location is recorded as Jsanders said. Again, it depends on the app. If it's mapping your location as you tag then it probably uses data...
