Exclamation OS: 8310 4.5.0.28 / 4.5.0.18 VodaCom - 06-05-2008, 10:49 PM

Well guys, it seems 4.5 for the 8310 has been released officially!! This is a legit carrier in South Africa GSM World - Roaming Thisis not a beta OS to my knowledge. Its offerd as the latest official OS for the carrier, therefore not beta!. A little warning to you guys, this build IS NOT STABLE, the radio cuts out. Download at your own risk. Enjoy

**Warning: This is not a stable OS release. While it has been officially released by VodaCom carrier, many users have had issues with dropping the EDGE signal, among others. Load this OS at your own risk. Read the posts below in this thread for users comments.

Software For BlackBerry Curve 8310 (TM)

BlackBerry Handheld Software v4.5.0.18 (Multilanguage)

Package Version: 4.5.0.28
Consisting of:
Applications: 4.5.0.18
Software Platform: 2.5.0.44
File name: 8310M_PBr4.5.0_rel28_PL2.7.0.43_A4.5.0.18.ex e
File size:77.30MB

Click http://41.192.255.27/vcozadoc/servic...4.5.0.18.e xe

Instructions for installing on ANY carrier's 8310:

1. Make sure you have the latest version of Desktop Manager installed.
2. Download the above file to the PC then install it to the PC by running the file you downloaded.
3. Locate the vendor.xml file and delete it. It's located in c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader
4. Plug in BB and Open Desktop Manager. You should be prompted to upgrade.
The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a white screen with an hourglass for up to 20 minutes at a time while the DM says "waiting for initialization."
If you end up with a white screen with small icons and the number 507, simply connect to DM again and run application loader again and it should load the OS to the device.

First time I've seen a firmware link on this site that didn't point to RIM.

Not the first time, it is common. For instance, all the VZW OSs come from a SmithMicro site, if I recall correctly.

Whatever the case, this carrier has released this version.

It is likely the same as the earlier beta .18, hence the number .18

Didn't know if they "fix' things in that version and then offically release it.

Yes, it's the same version. It had EDGE dropouts. Not too bad but a little frustrating at times. This appears to be legit, so......try if you like.

Yeah its the same version. I really didnt like this version myself. A few EDGE dropouts. Its been on the net for weeks. Most people complained when they used it!

I was using that release in early May while traveling a good bit and yes as they said, EDGE would drop and not come back until a battery pull, and even then it was spotty to get the full EDGE back.

Original South Africa indication was correct.

From vodacom:
"Last Updated 14 June 2007 - Vodacom is a Pan-African cellular communications company providing a world class GSM service to more than 23 million customers in South Africa, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lesotho and Mozambique.

Vodacom South Africa launched its 3G network in December 2004 and its 3G HSDPA network in March 2006. Vodacom Tanzania announced the launch of its 3G network in February 2006"

Anyhow, why are they releasing a beta version and such an old one at that? I dont get it...

It sounds like at least one company got so disgusted with BB not being able to release a good 4.5 in our lifetimes that they went ahead and went with what they had and if it ever gets any better they will replace it then.

Wow, they sure messed up the address book. That view really sucks and I can't seem to get rid of it. Such a small screen hate to see so much wasted space. What were they thinking? I also think they wasted a lot of space with the emails and even the message view seems to show less at one time. This is not like RIM to put out such a crappy look.

PLEASE NOTE:

There are several major negatives to this package, which I still consider a beta.

1. GPS functionality will be lost on some GPS enabled applications.

2. Edge dropouts are frequent

3. Freezes

4. Reboots at random

5. Severe lag at times

I actually use Vodacom here in South Africa. Typical of them to release a beta. Will rather wait for a "proper" offical launch.

I found 4.5.0.42 yesterday and loaded it. The browser issues I was having are resolved, youtube video seems to be improved a little and it seems a bit quicker than the previous Beta OSes. Also Mapquest seems to acquire a GPS fix alot quicker with this version. All in all I'd say it kicks it, great OS so far.

As Always.....

Happy Berrying!

4.5.0.42 was out on May 04, 2008. I got it on May 6, 2008 and since then I'm using it.

I haven't see any problem with this OS. I think it's the perfect OS so far.

Just an FYI -

I jumped on the bandwagon here for the OS 4.5
I installed 4.5.0.42 (58) version last night on my AT&T branded Curve 8310
I haven't had any issues so far.

I have the following 3rd party apps installed and they work as designed...
BBAlerts v1.65
InfoSpace FindIt v1.4.0
Telenav GPS v5.1.1.30
JiveTalk v1.0.5
Viigo v2.2.82
Facebook v1.2.0
Empower HTML Viewer Pro v3.0.68.7
YWeather v0.4.1

I also was able to install the free games RIM puts out every once in a while...
Disco Bowling
Christmas Pool
Poker Blast
Soduku
Pub Checkers

I also installed PacMan without issue.

I have some quick link Icons installed....
CNBC
ESPN Launcher
ABCNews

So far so good.
Thought this might help some worried about jumping over to the newer OS.
I find it to be more stable and quicker than the currently supplied AT&T 4.2.2 OS.

I also moved up from DM 4.2 to DM 4.3 in Vista X64 without any issues.

**Bring on the BOLD!
