I set up contacts for custom ringtones, check marked all the boxes (important calls, calls from [blank]...), put to tone only, medium volume...but it won't ring for anyone. I tried a hard reset, but it still doesn't work. Any help?

1. make sure you edit your profile settings both IN and OUT of holster.

2. if it is not working, are your ringtones loaded to your device memory or your media card.

Any other details you can share, would be helpful.

Profile settings are correct.
Ringtones are on the device memory (I just got the phone yesterday, so I haven't had a chance to get a card.)

I think the root of the issue is related to the fact the speakerphone function doesn't work either.

Basically, I can't get any external sounds from any source at all.

If you have not done so, with the BB powered ON, remove the battery, hold a minute and replace to reboot, and recheck. That battery pull solves 90 of most common issues and glitches.

Was this a used BB you purchased?

I've done that a couple of times.....

Brand new BB.

Is it possible to 'replace' the speaker?

"Brand New" would take me right back to the store for a replacement.

Yes it is possible to replace the speaker, but just not wise on a new device when warranty will replace it.

I'm heading there tomorrow, I just don't want to end up with a refurb. I alos thought that I might have set something up wrong even though I had a 7520 that I just swapped the info from.

i don't know "all" the rules, but it is brand new, a few days, you really should demand a brand new in the box device.
