| it's the sampling rate of the mp3 and the read speed of your card.
if you have a slow card and high sample rate mp3's, the BB is not able to read the song fast enough to play fully as a ringtone.
but if you simply play it in the media player, it will play fine since it's not readiing directly off the card... it caches it to local memory to improve performance.
get a faster Class 4 or Class 6 card and/or sample your music at no higher than 192kbps (may vary depending on the dynamics of the song chosen).
my solution is to create song snippets just for ringtone purposes, encoded at 128kbps max Variable Bit Rate, and have them saved on a 4gb SanDisk micro SDHC Class4 card.
