If the handoff is not successful it will become stuck with the wifi network and not send/receive e-mail. This is why when you enter the wifi network it will send/receive. T-Mobile PDA reps can do that as well and you might find it easier to get through to them.
Or you can simply perform the battery pull then Register Now from the Host Routing Table to update the service books.
