EDGE & GPRS vs edge & gprs

I bought a T-mobile 8300 2nd hand for use in South Africa.

The device is fully unlocked and works on the GSM network for calls.

I have blackberry data setup on my account, but the device does not receive service books as it never moves from edge/gprs to EDGE/GPRS ...

I have also got t mobile to release the PIN, as originally, i got the error - the device is registered to another network .... - anyone got any ideas on how to fix this?

Have you tried going to options > advanced options > host routing table, hitting menu key and selecting register now.

Laurent08 06-11-2008 04:17 AM

yes, ive tried that several times.
done hard resets etc ... nothing seems to help.

Mmm. You wouldn't be using a prepaid /pay and go sim card by any chance? A blackberry data package cannot usually be added to a prepaid sim and you get calls and texts only usually.

Are you in an area of good signal strength?

Another possibility is that your carrier has not provisioned your account correctly.

The service books are what actually activate GPRS /EDGE come to think of it as I didn't have this signal until my data plan was activated.

It is provisioned correctly, i have been using an 8310 for the last 8 months - which broke!
Its really weird!
I think the unit may be faulty, but it seems weird to have that as a 'fault'

Laurent, has the PIN on the new device been registered on your BIS account? Sign in to your BIS account for your carrier and input the PIN?

It is strange indeed.

Are the data services turned off? Have a look in Options > network.

What about the' turn wireless on' icon?

I am sure you have checked all this already but double checking won't do any harm.

Laurent, has the PIN on the new device been registered on your BIS account? Sign in to your BIS account for your carrier and input the PIN?

It does accept my PIN and IMEI on the My carriers BIS page - now that Tmobile has released the PIN ...

However, i then send service books - get a popup stating the service books have been sent successfully but because im on gprs or edge, i dont receive them....

You're registered with T-Mobile in the US..?

Then which carrier are you on now with in South Africa..?

You do know that in order for you to get the GPRS/EDGE signal in another country, it helps a lot if you're registered to the carrier in that country that has a partnership with our home carrier..?

When did i ever say i was with t mobile in the US??

I purchased a 2nd hand unlocked T mobile device.

I am with MTN in South Africa and my BB service is fully provisioned on this carrier.

Go to options > security options > firewall, ensure blackberry internet service is not checked and that the firewall is disabled.

The only other possibility is the BIS webpage settings, go back there and ensure all details are correct and that you selected 'change device' to enter the pin & imei.

Other than this I am stumped!

JSanders 06-11-2008 08:10 AM

And, at this point, you have removed the battery, while powered on, replaced and rebooted?

I have checked the security options - firewall is disabled and none of the boxes are checked.

I have also rebooted many times, I have even re installed the OS.

I have compared the device settings to a friends device - he is on the same carrier - and all seems correct.

Is it possible that this is a fault?
Seems strange that all works except that.

When I called my provider to add data I had the same problem. After I finally got through to Tech Support for BlackBerry, the guy told me the customer service person added the data plan for what amounts to a PDA phone, not the BlackBerry plan. I'd call your provider and make sure that your provider added the correct package to your line.

I really dont believe that is the problem - an i have also checked many times with my provider ...

The reason that its unlikely is that i've been using either a Blackberry or blackberry connect device for over 2 years - and nothing has changed besides the fact that my 8310 recently died ...

Not really. There's a lot that can go wrong with these devices.
