Default T-Mobile 8320 Curve bluetooth on UMA compatibility list - 06-12-2008, 04:22 PM

i know there is a significant issue with using bluetooth headsets during UMA (hotspot, wi-fi) calls. the result is the same amongst all users with the issue, "calls initiated over UMA with a BT headset result in failure to connect, phone reverts to EDGE mode". all other connections with BT work as normal.

i had the issue with my new 8320 when paired with my Jabra BT8040. i then borrowed my brother's Motorola H375 and had the same problems. i went to my local T-Mobile store to see if they were aware of the issue and to start playing "musical headsets" until i found one that worked. the CS agents were unaware of the issue, but they called tech support which did. in a desperate attempt to help me, the tech on the line then called RIM while i waited and gave me a list of all headsets that had been specified in complaints related to this issue. the RIM rep then called us directly to say that he uses UMA without issue with a Plantronics Discovery 655. i decided to buy the Blackberry branded Plantronics Discovery 655+ instead, assuming since it is Blackberry branded, it should increases my chances. it works like a charm.

as some of us know, reverting back to an older OS can resolve the problem, but with the caveat of decreased functionality or living with an older bug. we also have our fingers crossed that the 4.5OS will fix the issue once released.

so i would like your help in starting a definitive list to help others be able to more assuredly get a BT headset that will be compatible. please list the headset(s) you have used that either worked or didnt work. i will come by often and update the list in this post so the info stays easy to find. there will be a list for the "i have one, it works" and a list for "i tried it and it doesnt". i will also include the list i received from RIM and T-Mobile of known incompatible headsets.

* according to RIM and T-Mobile
# only one confirmed user

Most likely will not work:
Jabra BT5010#
Jabra BT8040

Motorola H350*
Motorola H375
Motorola H580*
Motorola H700*
Motorola H710*

Nokia BH600*
Nokia BH200*

Samsung WEP200*
Samsung WEP210*
Samsung WEP410*

Likely to work properly:
Aliph Jawbone
Aliph Jawbone 2# (may have issue, refer to Post #4)

Blackberry/Plantronics HS-655+

Cellpoint FlaminGo#

Motorola H500#

Plantronics Voyager 220
Plantronics Voyager 520
Plantronics Discovery 640#
Plantronics Discovery 655 (AH date code or higher)
Plantronics Discovery 665
Plantronics Discovery 815#

just doing what i can to give back as this forum has helped me out immensely with its huge archive. hopefully this list will help out at least one person. thanks again, forum people!

I could've used this thread last week. I didn't know that WiFi and Bluetooth were on the same frequency. I never had a problem with any other BT headset and WiFi until I got my Jawbone 2. I even had the original Jawbone with my BB 8320. No problem at all with it and WiFi.

I did a little experimenting and came up with a good solution. By setting my 8320 to Mobile Network Preferred, I can keep WiFi on and still use my J2. This works for me because some of my 8320's internet sites only are accessible via WiFi. If I switch to WiFi Preferred, the J2 won't work. Weird, huh?

For the record, the Jawbone 2 is the best BT headset I've ever used.

Add the Jabra BT5010 to the list of incompatible also...
I've had issues since day one with UMA.
I sure hope 4.5 fixes this.

during a hotspot wifi/UMA call? or just during a regular cellular call? because there are many others, including RIM, that beg to differ. more details if you have them, please.

Automatic dropped call... then reverts back to EDGE.
I never can get it to even dial out before it drops the connection...

that's exactly why i started this list. choosing one of the headsets in the "likely good" list will work with your phone for UMA calls.

4.5 is "supposed" to fix it, but of course all is unsure at this point.

the problem seems to lie in how the curve's bluetooth stack handles automatic channel hopping... some headsets are able to properly hop channels to prevent signal interference with wi-fi, many are not. this list is designed to hopefully narrow it down so for those who depend on a bluetooth headset AND uma calling can easily find a replacement headset that SHOULD work for them.

updated. thank you!

JB2 has a note added, as someone posted that theirs worked but with an exception.

I just replaced my 8100 with the 8320 in the past couple weeks. Using Tmo's Hot Spot service and a Plantronics Voyager 520 without any issues. Hope that helps.

My HS700 works perfectly on UMA.

I have the Plantronics 655 and while it works on Edge or UMA, I had lots of problems with it and voice dialing, as well as the design. I also had the same problem with voice dialing with the Plantronics 520 but it could have been user error on both headsets. Interestingly, I went back to using the Plantronics 220, the least expensive of the three (can you say Wally World?), and it works beautifully.
