Hello !!

I'm coming over from Palm Treo 700p smartphone to Blackberry Curve on the verizon network.

I'm interested in reading up on the features and cabilities of the device, in particular about how it handles POP3 and IMAP email. Is there a FAQ about the device I can read up on to get started.

I, too, am coming back to the wonderful world of the Crackberry. I had a 7100i when I was with Nextel (before they linked with Sprint) and was on here before as well. I recently got a Moto Q and that POS is done. I can't WAIT for my Curve to get here this week!

I'd like to get feedback to the following questions:

I'll be signing up with verizon's $30 blackberry dataplan which allows Email and Web access (unlimited). One of my email accounts will be IMAP, the other will be POP3. In my reading, it found that the email client does a 'pull' every 15 mins. Is this changeable, meaning what if I want email to be checked every 5 mins ?

How will the attachments be handled with this plan and the Curve ? In particular, Word, excel files. I read that Dataviz has documents to go for Blackberry. Will I need to purchase that (or something eqivalent)

I have vonage service. Voicemails are sent as attchments to my email account as WMV files. How can I play the WMV attachment files on the Curve.

Verizon says I can thether (spelling ??) the Curve to a laptop for free, given I have unlimited data plan. Can anyone confirm this ?

Nope. BIS will adjust the polling interval automatically in certain situations. You can't set the polling interval. If you want it to be every 5 minutes you're SOL. There's a 3rd party email client that might allow you to set the polling interval. Logicmail, I think? I don't really know anything about it though.

The plan doesn't really matter. You will need a third party app for Office file support unless you decide to go with BES.

Hmm, don't know on this one but IIRC tethering isn't free with VZW. I can't imagine them giving you something like that...

if you get the data plan that is one up from the 29.95 plan you have now you can tether. i think its in the 40 dollar range.

I'm using my 8320 right now tethered to my laptop as a dialup modem. its really simple to do but I'm on tmo and i know there are slightly different methods to set it up. There is a step by step manual on how to set up your bb as a dial up modem in the blackberryFAQ's. I am no computer wiz but I set this up for me and for my roomie who has a pearl. Pretty simple once you get it working. and the curve is a relatively fast modem, compared to other dial ups.

I think Verizon still charges $15 a month for tethering regardless of plan. I could be wrong, though.

U have a Tmo Curve and a Sprint Curve, both were able to open excel, pdf and word right out of the box within emails.

Courtney - I spoke with Verizon again about the thethering, and they are confirming its of no additional cost and that the $30 plan covers it.

As an afterthought, I'll be using discount offered through a large corporate plan, perhaps, under that, I'm getting that ability for $30.

The BB i'm about to get will be on Verizon. Unfortunately, I'm not in a position to switch carriers at this point

I'll look into another 3rd party email program. I'd like the ability to control how often the emails "push".

I also suspected the need to use a 3rd party software to edit word documents. In reading dataviz documents to go, their premium edition offers that capability.

You will need eOffice or DocumentsToGo for editing on the BB itself.
