buy an html reader, either BBsmart or Empower. i personally use the Empower basic HTML reader for $10.
they both integrate seamlessly into your blackberry message reader.
the upcoming OS and server update will be including native HTML email reading capability, but no one except RIM knows when it will be finalized... but it is expected to drop this summer, and has in a few locations worldwide already. so if you can wait, you can save a dime, but if you have to have the functionality now, search mobihand or handango for the software.
and to answer your question before you ask, RIM did this to reduce bandwidth on the network and decrease load times since their technology arrived before the advent of 3g wireless data.
