Why does the lcd backlight on my 8310 sometimes appear bright and sometimes dimmer and change between the two without even pressing any keys.
Does anyone elses do this?

Yes, it auto-adjusts to the ambient light around you. Brighter when it bright out so that you can see it and dimmer when it's dark so that it doesn't blind you. To test cover the LED (That is where the sensor is and it should light up the keyboard and dim if you are in a bright room).
