Default Verizon hiding GPS

Please Login to Remove!

I bought the Traffic Vizzon program. Thought it was unique and wanted to play around with it.

Won't work on the 8330 apparently because Verizon hides access to GPS data on their verison of the Curve. Why?

After struggling to get the GPS function on the Curve working we looked at the accuracy of the Google Maps program and found it to be 5000 meters....cell towers apparently. Accuracy for the Traffic program needs to closer to 50 meters.

I hear that Verizon is going to unlock access to GPS near the end of the summer.

Any news on this? Anyone know more about it?

Thanks,

Gary

1. Within the 2nd or 3rd quarter (2nd quarter started in April), and after releasing the new VZ Nav, they will be anouncing that the GPS function on all VZW BB's will be opened for free app use. No more crippled GPS on VZW! She said they are testing their networks capability to handle the increase of data traffic from the free GPS use and so far it has been testing without problems.
2. June 1 event might just as well be an estimation for the release of VZNav 4.0 for BlackBerry.

In the latest specs for the Verizon 8330, they note that "customers will be able to upgrade to the new VZ Navigator (Version 4) in the coming weeks" (source: BlackBerry Curve 8330 Launched for Verizon Wireless - Mobiledia )

Once that's out, maybe they'll chillax on 3rd party GPS apps.

So it's past due or are you talking about 09? (good grief).

Gary

Never mind, I see your second post.... 2nd or 3rd quarter 08. So at the latest, (according to your information) the end of September 08.

Thanks....

Gary

That is, potentially, good news! If they hurry up I might even stay with them.

I was not happy when I figured out the were blocking features, and then lied when I asked about it.

I've been posting on Hofo trying to find out exactly how GPS is blocked by VZW. Everyone has said everything from a provisioning lock to firmware, to the fact it's not real GPS, which it can't be due to the fact that every other 8x30 has real GPS.

It seems to me that it has to be something internal with the BlackBerry. I don't think VZW would take the time and money to fiddle with their servers to block GPS from being used fully on BlackBerries. It's cheaper and easier to do software/firmware than to lock it out by server.

If that is the case, which I can't figure out, then there has to be a way to be able to use GPS on a BlackBerry. I wish I could get my hands on a Sprint or Alltel BlackBerry with GPS and put it on my VZW account and see if that allows me to use GPS. I have VZNav on my account, so it should work right away.

Anyone willing to donate for a good cause?

Not 100% true. Verizon opening up their network for use with any CDMA phone, its just a matter of provisioning. I used to use a Verizon phone on Sprint a few years ago. I had to hack the phone and enter in the correct PRLs and all of that, but it worked just fine.

A VZW device on the Sprint network /= Sprint device on the VZW network.

The VZW GPS has not been 'hacked' yet. Good luck.

Nothing is futile. Do you think Bell thought the telephone was futile or that Franklin thought electricity was futile?

Go nutz then, and no I don't think either of those two thought what they were working on was futile. They also did not have anyone trying to keep them from doing what they were attempting....

But Verizon did not own the signal on Bell's device, no the electricity in Franklin's lightening storm. And likely you are not Bell nor Franklin. Bad analogy.

So what did the guys at HoFo recommend that you do?

You know what? I'm sorry I even mentioned anything. Seems someone can't even have a goal set around here without someone being a douche and shooting it down...
