Default cleaning trackball without taking it out - 07-08-2008, 03:02 PM

Is there anyway I can clean my trackball without taking it out and actually make a difference in how good it rolls? Last time I tried to take it out it was kind of a disaster when I couldn't get it back in properly and in result had to get another one put in. I also don't really want to send it in to bbrepairshop.com again due to how pricey it is.

Thanks

There are excellent instructions here to remove and clean. Step by step with pictures. As long as you are carefuly and lay things in the exact order and position that they came out you should be fine.

Otherwise, If it's sticking then lock the keypad and roll it while keeping the trackball depressed in the opposite direction that it is sticking. You can spray compressed air on it (don't get too close). I would not recommend trying to clean the ball with any type of liquid without removal. Some will use a little windex on a rag but the moisture is just to risky in my opinion.

Good luck!

Rubbing alcohol, just a bit on the ball and roll it several times. You can also try a can of compressed air.

The instructions on here on how to clean your trackball arent very good at all. Its helpful that it has pictures, but that user is clearly an ESL speaker. It'd probably be easier to pay attention to what you're doing when you take it out; it gets easier with practice as well.

Yeah I thought the same thing, like as far as taking it out and cleaning it the first time I did it, it was fine. But in the guide, it pretty much has no specifics as to putting it back in, and it kind've screwed me.

Use a sharpie pen to mark a line on all parts. The ring and the assembly. Put it on the bottom and make sure it's aligned the same way. Use a little alcohol to remove it.

I strongly endose the Dirt Devil Detailer - a tiny vacuum about the size of a cordless screwdriver - pulls out dust & hairs and things - use it any time you open up the front or back of anything, on your PC keyboard & desktop pointing device, etc.

I'm guessing we all work in some form of office - find a first aid kit, and grab one of the rubbing alcohol swabs (an isopropyl alcohol wipe)... squeeze out a little of the alcohol, lock your keyboard (or turn off the phone) and firmly rub the ball in all directions for as long as the swab will stay wet... take a lint-free cloth and rub the ball gently to take off the excess alcohol/grime, and leave it to dry for a few minutes... worked like a charm for me - beats a cotton swab any day.

Just my 2 cents...

Does the alcohol help bring back the whiteness of the trackball?

Wirelessly posted

I have not to clean my trackball often to keep it white. I just wash my hands often.

You're lucky then. I was anal about keeping my hands (thumbs mainly) clean the first month I had this phone. After 2 weeks, it wasn't snow white anymore.
