Do you have encryption of media files turned on? The recorder will not save anything if media file encryption is on.

Yeah, get rid of that 4.3.1. That was the buggiest stuff I ever saw! It was never released (Thank heavens.) Yes, 4.4 was skipped over and they went straight to 4.5 due to major changes incorporated in this OS. 4.6 is on the Bold and 4.7 is on the Thunder. OS 5.0 will likely be the next OS upgrade for the existing8xxx devices. You probably won't ever see 4.6 or 4.7 for them.

This version has totally blown me away, great speed, tons of new features. bad enough the blackberry was addicting it gets worst with the simple fact that we can now watch streaming youtube videos. my woman has told me 4 times that if i plan to leave her for the damn thing, i told her that when it comes with a virgina attachment it might just happen, she wasnt to pleased with that comment lol.

Cant wait to bug my iPhone friends , all they had on me was the fact i could not stream youtube videos and the browser sucked a bit, now the browser is badass (i also use Opera) and i get youtube , but they still dont have a qwerty keyboard. BB FTW

You know I've dug around and dug around and can't come up with an answer to one question-- Is there any reason I have to leave the SIM in to do the OS upgrade?

Being as this process can be quite time consuming and I can't really be without cell service for that long I'd like to pop my sim into another phone for the duration of the upgrade.

Anyone have any reason to think not having the SIM in matters?

Dont quote me on this but i think its because the SIM card gives the new OS parameters from your Carrier and thats why it must be inside while doing the upgrade. Or its because like most GSM Phones before you can even use the phone or see any options on it you must insert a SIM card and its not a OS ralated thing but a Phone thing.

But in all honestly i think you can manage to wait 45 minutes without using the phone, its not as bad as it seems.

I'm scared...I'm afraid...I'm sweating bullets trying to decide since reading of all of the 'bugs' and stuff.

I really don't want to wait until T-Mo does an update on their page, but I also don't want to do this and hate it. This is my first BB and Im soooo confused as to what I should do!!!

Default A bit confused - 08-14-2008, 05:52 AM

Hello all,

I am a noob on the Blackberry - just got it yesterday in fact. Seeing this new OS and everything I am keen to upgrade as the OS is out of date (v4.2.2.184 at present), however, the OS update is for the Curve 8320, whilst mine is an 8320 Emerald. Does this make any difference at all?

Also should I upgrade my desktop manager to v4.5 (at present it is v4.2.2.14)?

Any help will be appreciated - I know these are very basic questions.......

Cheers,
Spaaarkz.

Just wanted to toss in my "me too". Upgraded my Tmo Curve 8320 yesterday. Took about 30-45 minutes start to finish just as advertised. I had to reset my TCP settings, and bit by bit the network started to do its job. UMA picked up after a little bit, tzones icon loaded up, and haven't found any issues yet. In fact, this update resolves at least one bug that I knew of in 4.2.

Lots of layout updates that make the screen even easier to read & look at.

I'm very pleased with the update so far.

Working quite well

Unfortunatley I have no way of properly hosting the software for download.

If its an unreleased OS your not allowed to provide links. And if its on "Some" sites it does not make it legal, its only legal if its on the official blackberry.com website or the official carriers website

Default slightly confused - 08-14-2008, 01:03 PM

I'm slightly confused. As I understand it there are 2 pieces of software (at least): The desktop software, which can be downloaded from the RIM web site, and is listed there as version 4.5 (downloads as 450_b016), and the handheld software, also available on the RIM site and listed there as 4.2.2.338.

Are the versions in this post any newer than these?

What many of you dont understand is that Blackberry makes a HandHeld Operating System for specific models and then the carriers "Add" to those Operating Systems. So in reality you can download the update posted here from Orange UK witch is an official release and not a Beta or internal only release and update your handhelds to that version even tho you might have T-Mobile.

But also keep in mind that in the internet nothing is safe from being downloaded before its official release dates, and you can find ANYTHING its just on how you look for it, We arent teasing we are giving feedback and at the same time we are playing with fire because any faulty upgrade that we do its our own fault and not RIM. And thats one of the main reasons BBF does not allow posting of Beta software, they can be liable for providing faulty software to a consumer and copyright infridgement. To avoid that they decide not to even provide such information. But it can be obtained from other sources.

Yes those are the "official" releases. But if you look at the very first post in this thread you will find an official 4.5.0.52 from Orange UK that can be upgraded to T-Mobile's 8320 Phones.

To upgrade is simple.

Download the latest Desktop Software (4.5 is the official release and can be found in the BlackBerry website)

After that its installed and you have restarted your computer you now download the Handheld update from the first post in this tread to your computer, execute the file when it finishes installing it will have the options to open the desktop manager when you click finish. Uncheck that and click finish.

Then go to Proggram Files > Common Files > Research in Motion > AppLoader and delete the vendor.xml file you see (If you dont want to delete it you can rename it)

Then you Open your Desktop Manager with your phone plugged in using USB (Updates cant be done using bluetooth sync).

If a update dialog didnt show up when you opened the Desktop Manager and your handheld is synched you can Select Application Loader and Then select the add and remove option.

Goodluck.

Default Which file? - 08-14-2008, 03:12 PM

Sorry, I am probably being stupid here, but I just downloaded the 4.5 Desktop Manager update (the top one from the list) but got the error message when trying to install it on my PC "Not a valid win32 application". So I probably have downloaded the vista version. However there is nothing to indicate which software is for vista and which for XP? Can anyone help?
I am finding this process quite confusing to be honest.
Thanks,
Spaarkz.

So it would seem that since i have updated to this latest update my phone will just randomly switch its self off and then back on, but the red light comes on and it takes about 3 mins to come back on?

Could this be due to a dodgy install? As i did not have the latest desktop manager when i did this install? I only got my phone yesterday aswell =(

Thanks for the help!

It's probably due to an issue with your media card. Copy the contents to your PC. Then reformat the card in OS 4.5 and then copy the the contents back. Copy the files from each folder individually so that if the issue arises again you can narrow down which folder has the conflicting file.

Did you try to downgrade and see if that fixes your problem?

at the moment, no version of 4.5 will. Try the OS 4.5 HTML viewer see if you like it. If you like Empower better, you'll have to turn off the native HTML viewer so the Empower one works. I've done this as comparing the Empower to Native ... well it's no comparison at all. Empower FTW!

Yeah i downgraded with no fix then upgraded again to no fix, so i contacted orange they told me to restore it to factory so i did (already had but they said i needed to otherwise they couldn't suggest anything) and after this it still didn't work so they are bringing me a new one tomorrow, will let you people know if this one works right or not.

Thanks for all the help!

Then you Open your Desktop Manager with your phone plugged in using USB (Updates cant be done using bluetooth sync).

If a update dialog didnt show up when you opened the Desktop Manager and your handheld is synched you can Select Application Loader and Then select the add and remove option.

Goodluck.
Got it. But I found out that I don't have an 8320, but an 8310.

Installed the upgrade for the 8310. Works fine. Have some questions, will switch to 8310 forum. Thanks again.

I really don't want to wait until T-Mo does an update on their page, but I also don't want to do this and hate it. This is my first BB and Im soooo confused as to what I should do!!!

My brother bought home a brand new Curve 2 days ago. The first thing I did was take it from him and upgraded the OS to 4.5.

I'm a T-Mobile user and just bought my Curve less than two months ago. I was a little nervous about the upgrade but I'm glad I did it. It's fantastic! I've had no issues at all. The only thing I need to figure out is how to get rid of the Facebook icon that T-Mobile seemed to have forced on me...
