You delete the Vendor.xml file?

Quite bizarre..... You had the desktop manager CLOSED when you deleted the vendor.xml file, right?

Try going to C:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader and double clicking on Loader.exe.

Does it detect your pin and see the upgrade then?

You're sure the vendor.xml is deleted? Double check. c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader.

Are there any other instances of the file on your PC anywhere? Do a search for it and include hidden files/folders.

I don't think vendor.xml matters. I panicked when I realized I forgot to delete it, but 4.5 runs great on my curve, even with it there.

I've explained this a bazillion times on this forum and even in this thread. The vendor.xml has no effect on what is loaded onto the device. It only allows the DM to load the OS or not.

All OS's and DM have a vendor.xml file. However, many of the unreleased versions out there have blank ones. That means that it will load even if the vendor.xml is still there. If it comes from a carrier then it will have a full vendor.xml and the OS will only load on that carrier's device unless the vendor.xml file is deleted.

Probably a very good idea at this point.

Start with the instructions and follow them as written and in order.

so did the uninstall and reinstall, deleted vendor.xml, plugged in bb and opened DM and wasn't prompted for anything. Maybe it just can't be done on this phone.

Isn't there an easier way to upgrade the OS on my BB 8310? I was hoping that it could be done OTA or through BB Destop Software. This is my first BB and I looked through AT&T and the latest OS they have is the one that is already on my phone, 4.2.2.170.

At&t announced the OS 4.5 update will be available on Sept 23rd. You will use Desktop Manager to update your Blackberry.

1. Make sure you have the latest Desktop Manager version
2. Download the firmware update for your model
3. Install OS update
4. Plug in Blackberry and Application Loader should come up showing you have a update available. If not follow the procedure in the 1st post on how to delete the vendor/device files.

BTW everyone is wishing for OTA updating but it's not quite there yet. OS 4.5 has a "update" built in but it's likely governed by at&t.

I have an idea... try it with vendor.xml like i did and tell us what happens. if doing it with it there didn't work the first time, try again

When it comes out where do I find the download? Do I just use BB Desktop Software to download the4.5 version of the handheld OS?

You can find all the download links here:

BlackBerry Operating System Downloads - BlackBerryFAQ

You just download and then install the OS to your computer. Then use Desktop Manager to install it to the BB.

You don't have to wait for AT&T to release it. The OS in this thread will work just fine. I myself am using 4.5.0.52 from TIM Italy. No need for it to be an AT&T release.

BBMaps requires a service book now and ATT doesn't push the service books for BlackBerry Maps.

So what are we missing in BB Maps 4.5? I am pretty ticked that I can't upgrade, b/c I really like that app!

I only have had one gripe with my new update. The facebook application doesn't work. When I open it up and it asks for me to login, if I start to type, the cursor moves like I'm typing but nothing shows up and it won't login. Just sits there and does absolutely nothing. Very frustrating.

Many of us are seeing this but did you know you really don't need the Roxio bloat to work through all the issues and manage your mem cards?

For example, I have been using the BB Sync for iTunes and it syncs all my playlists easily...

And on one occasion, we had to move or modify the Roxio on one of our vp customers computers after we migrated them from Lotus to Exchange. The Roxio app got caught in a loop and we lost control of XP until we moved back to a restore point!

Besides, if you allow mass media access on the BB Handheld, the mem card will mount as a drive letter and you can manage everything there.
(IMHO)

JC - thks for this - somehow I could never figure out why it did not work and stopped checking the box on the updates...

I never called rim on this one issue and it was never a big priority.

AT&T probably wants you to spend $120 a year on their branded Telenav anyway...

I just upgraded the OS on my brand new 8310. It went well, no error messages and such things, but there are a couple of things...

My Blackberry Maps icon is gone. I can find it on the applications list on the phone, but can't load it. Do I need to go back and swap out files from a fresh download? Or is this something else?

My Browser Icon is gone. Again... it's in the apps list, but I can't open it.

I don't have a data plan yet... Might they show up when the phone thinks I'll have a use for them?

You need a data plan for the browser and for BBMaps. The new BBMaps needs a service book now.

I just upgraded and everything seemed to go well. I followed the posted instructions in this thread and it was ok. One comment that may help people: There are two installation steps, one for the DM and one for the OS. I did the DM first and let it settle in with a couple of reboots and a test link to the BB. Then I installed the OS file and rebooted. It sits resident and waits for your next link. BTW, I installed it with the BB disconnected from the PC. I reconnected it after a couple of clean reboots after both installs. Once connected I waited for the "found new hardware" stuff to finish and then launched the DM. It the took over with the OS upgrade. I left my SD card in during the upgrade and have had no probs yet. All of my settings and pics were still on it after upgrade. I am missing the Facebook icon. Should be easy enough to reinstall.
Also, did someone mention that the email is now HTML? Do I need to enable anything to get that to happen?

Hope this helps.
Craig
