Someone on another thread was having a similar issue using DM 4.5. Perhaps try going with DM 4.3?

What I suggested definately wouldnt help if the DM says 4.5 and the handset is 4.2... I think you should try to reinstal the DM and see if it finds the correct version.
I've done several uninstalls of DM 4.5 and reinstalls. nothing gets fixed.......

You're doing something wrong. Install DM. Install the OS. THEN delete vendor.xml. It WILL find the software as long as you're installing 8310 software.

What I usually do is setup DM to prompt me for the email profile. Then, I can hit "cancel" and it will treat it like a BIS upgrade with no connection to the server. I do my upgrade. Then when I'm done restoring and making sure the OS seems stable, I plug it back in, open DM and choose my email profile. Let it sit for a few minutes and EA will start on it's own.
I agree this is very important, as my IT people are getting frustrated wth me, I think. I would..... But your instructions are unclear to me, a novice. For example what's "vpn"; how do I set DVM to net/bes etc....

If you don't know how to do this I don't recommend doing it. You can easily screw up your email settings to where you won't be able to send/receive email. Any mistake and the connection between your BB and the BES will be broken. Contact your IT department and I'm sure, if they want you to be able to do this, they will help you install DM to be used in this manner.

JC,

In my DM 4.5, The server shows 'online'...so it means I am connected to the mail server, yes...?

So, if I want to upgrade now, without bothering my BB Administrator for Enterprise Activation, what exactly do I need to do..?

Thanks,

Ray

CSO,

If you're having DM4.5, look at the bottom left corner of the main screen after you've plugged in your device :

Server status : Online

4.5.0.52 (recent TIM release) seems very stable except for Empower which stopped working when I upgraded from 4.5.0.37. I'm a sucker for upgrading when vendors release new versions of 4.5, but I always lose a half day fine tuning and getting all aps to work. I'm not complaining and know I don't have to step up to .55, but I'm hoping time will give us some observations on changes from .52. Any comments yet or is it too early?

Thx to all for the great advice!

not to mention we dont want people installing desktop manager in our company. nearly everything u can do from dm u can do from the handheld and dm is just one more place for something to go wrong. simplify.

Two months ago, I saw a provocative movie on cable TV. It was called The Net, with that girl from the bus.

.55 has given me my 3MB back that somehow got lost with the previous two betas. I'm back at 23MB free with a few things installed. I've only noticed one issue so far. On a couple of html emails, I get a prompt saying no message services, message cannot be sent just when viewing the email. I've never seen that before and I've had most 4.5 betas on here. Its not a real issue though and I feel this one is by far the fastest and its very stable like .52

Keep it going RIM

Click the "UpdateService" link then search for 8310, this is where it directs

http:/ / members.a1.net/updateservice/bb/

(remove spaces)

If your looking for the firmware update. I can't get the Desktop Manager link to work either, but you can navigate around the blackberry site to d/l it.

Hope that helps

If you had any version prior to .52 it had wallpapers and videos (unless you removed them.) .52 and .55 do NOT include those anymore, thus the 3Mb.

Understood John. However, I am comparing the difference between .52 and .55 as reported by options > status before and after upgrade.

.52 - ~24M
.55 - ~27M

I believe I followed the directions thoroughly on multiple attempts, and still receive an error at the onset of installation. The error reads :

"A fatal error has occurred while updating your device's software. Please try again."

I get this same error right at the beginning of the installation while it is connecting to my device. Any insights?

Is A1.NET a legitimate carrier? The reason I ask is that the download is not from a blackberry.net address. I may be a bit paranoid, but I just want to make sure that there are no trojans in the OS.

ok, found my own answer. They're a part of Vodafone. The main vodafone.com site links to them when selecting Austria in "Where are you from."

I wonder why in the last two releases RIM leaves out the preloaded wallpapers and custom folder colours?

The icon is just a folder for the Docs To Go apps. If they're not in the folder, maybe theyre somwhere else.

I think RIM did it on purpose to free up memory. They left the wallpapers in the 8700 versions...

Thanks John for the warning, but I'm game. On the other hand I will not attempt to do anything without more guidance from you or someone who can explain more. I'd appreciate it if you or others would provide more details as to what to do, since I otherwise don't know where to even start.

thanks
