|  BB will not Connect Long enough to be Detected my Desktop Software!

I am in need of help for some reason when I plug my BB into the computer with the USB cord the charging icon is on for 5 seconds and then disappears. Well I cannot get the desktop software to detect the device so that I can sync it up for back up the device.
Desktop software 4.2.2.14
device software Platform 2.5.0.30
Running XP Pro
Please help!
