once a certificate is installed on the bb, how do you use it to sign or encrypt a message? the only option i see when composing a new message is to attach the certificate. this would be good for sending your public key to someone else so that they can decrypt messages from you, but thats not what im going for.

do you have firmware 4.5 or at least the s/mime support package installed in your device ? If yes, smime option will sow up in the message application.

4.5 with s/mime... as i said, the s/mime options are there, and i can associate a certificate for signing/encryption. BUT when i choose to write an email there is NO option to actually sign or encrypt the message. the bb site says that i should have an option under the "using" menu but its not there
