I have a user that just purchased a Curve, and I have activated him on the BES. He only has Google Maps installed.

Can someone please tell me the default amount of memory in a Curve 8310 v4.2.2.170 (Platform 2.5.0.30)?
His device is showing about 7900000 bytes free and from everything I have read, it should be close to double that.

Mine has that amount.

You can probably increase it by about 3MB just by deleting the sample video. For more comprehensive memory optimization, take a look here:

its also depends on which curve you are talking about the 8330 has 96mb preinstalled and runs about 50 mb free

The 8310 (quoted in the original note) comes with 64mb.

7.9mb is low. You start out with 64mb.

Yes, the memory is 64 Mb. And you should have at least 12Mb in order to have your BB ruuning smothly.

Have you downloaded any ringtone or wallpaper? Maybe take some pictures, record voice notes? If yes, you should get at least a 2Gb card for your phone, and move the content to the card. Once you installed the card, the photos or new files will saved on the card.

Just a thought and might be worth a look...
Check to see if he took a bunch of pictures without a mem card...

Based on what? My 8310 has run smoothly for months on 8MB. It's currently higher but where did 12MB come from?

I tell users 15 mb is a good number, 10 is on the lowside for me.

It is all personal preferences and what works for that user. For a user who won't manage their memory, a higher number around 15mb makes me feel safer making the recommendation.
