Default spotty data link with 4.5.0.69? - 08-27-2008, 07:18 PM

Wonder if you guys with 4.5.0.69 has the same issue?

I have 8320 from TMO with 4.5.0.69. The data link with EDGE or WiFi hasn't been very stable. For instance Gmail could work for a few minutes or an hour, but then for the next couple hours no new emails show up even if my account does have new ones. Then the next hour it might work again. The same thing happens for Google Maps and browser. All these while the EDGE or UMA logo is shown.

Is there anything I can do to improve it?

I haven't had any problems with this release...

Perhaps it's related to my EDGE service because the issue happened much more often with EDGE than with WiFi. My WiFi service also happened to be a bit spotty these days. It used to be very stable.

I had the problem last night as well; it seems to be that the EDGE loss (spottiness? heh) creeps in after a soft reboot; for instance uninstall an app and it reboots the phone. If you pull the battery and do a hard reboot, the radio is fine again.

I can't verify that 100% but that's what I've seen so far on my end...

Actually, now I'm sure it's mainly problem on BB and beta OS. My WiFi at home has been stable for a while and working smoothly. But this morning my BB can't even load a simple web Wikipedia page in BB browser (not to mention Opera which worked even less frequently). I had to quite and come back then it started and finished loading.

It often seemed to me that the web connection went dead in the middle, after little or more use. And often the easiest way to bring it back is to perform a search in Google Search application. Then either WiFi or EDGE connection would suddenly came back on (like coming up of Gmail alert or map update in Google Maps). All these while UMA or EDGE symbol was clearly displayed on the screen.

So, this still remains a mystery to me. I've owned 8320 for only ~10 days and on the 3rd day I updated OS to 4.5.0.69. So it's hard for me to say if the factory 4.2.x.x OS is more stable (thought it was). Now with beta OS, my BB froze about every few days. Like this morning it froze while scanning for Wi-Fi networks. After more than 10min of freezing (no respond to any key press), the only thing I could do was to press Alt-shft-Del to reboot.

Maybe I should revert to factory OS. But I'd rather stay with beta due to video capturing capability.

Are there ways to improve stability (networking and general operation)? Is it related to available memory or installed 3rd party applications (though they're not running)?

I tried it a while ago but since I found the soft reboot (Alt-Shift-Del) did the same thing (often re-established connection but lost it again after a short while), I haven't done it.
