Default Texting sorta weird

On my previous 'cheap' cellphone, I had the ability to include email addresses and phone numbers in a group and then send a text to that group. Message would be sent to phone numbers as text and same message would be sent to email addresses. I don't recall there being a 160 character limit.

It seems like I can't send an SMS Txt to email addresses and phones at the same time. It looks like I have to send messages to an email address using my email client and to phone numbers as SMS Txt. I'm limited to 160 characters on my texting.

Am I missing something fundamental here?

You're not missing anything. The device is functioning as designed.
SMS has always had a per-character limit. Your older phone may not have recognized it, and instead your carrier probably split your longer messages into multiple texts before they are received by the recipient.

^^ Yep. That's how BlackBerry devices work.
