GPS refresh can take several tries to lock satellites. Be sure you are in an open area with an unobstructed view of the sky. Keep trying options>advanced>gps>refresh. It may also help to do this immediately following a battery pull. At least I find that it helps.
Treat your password like your toothbrush. Don't let anybody else use it, and get a new one every six months.

I know some GPS units use a predictive process by which it finds the satellites. The first time is going to take a longer but once it finds them once it looks there again first. I don't know if the 8310 does this or not.

My wife is having the same problem on her 8310.
she gets the "searching for Satellites" and it either takes for ever. or we give up and close.

On My Pearl 8130, I have no issues, It will refresh my location or find satellites almost instantly, and we are standing side by side.

You really need to be outside in an area with a clear view of the sky. GPS isn't made to work inside.

As for where to look, the device downloads an ephemeris table which tells it where to look. That has to be done every so often to keep it up to date.
