|  There's no "COMPOSE SMS" to be seen

I'm a total newbie here. I just inherited 8300 from my brother in law who recently passed away. So I just used my SIM card and transferred onto the 8300. Everything works fine.. except there's no way I can compose SMS message!?? Is there a certain setup so that I can see "compose SMS" on the list?
I've shown my 8300 to my long time blackberry user and they were clueless.
Also I've noticed that in the firewall settigs, the SMS messages are being blocked. How do I unblock it?
PLEASE HELP!
