Remove your media card and see if that fixes it? You may need to backup your card and reformat in OS 4.5.

Its one of two things. Low memory or the media card. Try with no media card at all.
What is your "file free" under Options >Status

Upgrade from 4.5.0.55 to .81? -
10-05-2008, 10:58 PM
I've been using 4.5.0.55 for several weeks. It works quite well, although I do get freezes every so often. Today I reformatted the media card to 4.5 and have 10 meg free file memory in the BB, so maybe that will fix it so far as the freezes are concerned.
Is it worthwhile going through the process of upgrading to .81 from .55?
Thanks.

10Meg free is pretty low. I'd say that's why you get freezing (hourglassing.)

Actually, the freezing I get is without any hourglass--it just freezes and stops completely, then I have to reboot and it's OK again.
But what about upgrading to 81 from 55?

I'd upgrade.
Do you have any 3rd party apps?

Yes, a number of them.
And an upgrade means going through the process of manipulating the Java folder for the BB Maps, etc. from 4.2 (I have AT&T whose service pack for the 4.5 BB Maps was empty--on purpose, I presume, since they don't want customers to have it.) Also, an upgrade always seems to mess up one or more apps, lose icons, etc., none of which is irreparable, but it's time consuming. Is 81 more stable or handle memory better, or have some useful extra features that 55 didn't have? I found the upgrades through 37 and 55 to be significant improvements. Is that true for 81, do you think?

My guess is that either low memory or a 3rd party app is causing the freeze ups. 4.5.0.69 was significantly snappier than .55. If you're using anything older than .69 I would upgrade.

this version 4.5.0.81 is giving me lots of lockups - I heard there's an upgrade out again?

Not officially released by a carrier, no.
This OS worked great for me, no lockups. I would suggest you remove some third party apps until you determine which is the culprit.

I bit the bullet and upgraded today.
I had to go through the usual tweaking, but it was seamless and there are no problems with the BB. It also freed up about 8 meg of file memory, probably because it installed a new version of Docs to Go which did not include the trial upgrade that I had DL'ed the last time.
Bottom line is, it works. Whether it's much faster than 55 isn't clear yet.

That's the old version of DTG. You need to delete the DocumentsToGo.alx file in order to keep the upgraded version of DTG.

Yes, thanks. I actually wanted to get rid of the bloated trial version of the Premium DTG--I wasn't using it, and it was just talking up space. So I put back the 1.0 standard version via the BB 4.5, re-registered DTG, and then upgraded via the BB to 1.002.
I hope this is the last significant upgrade to 4.5. It works well, is as fast as I need it to be, and seems to be stable. About the only thing left would seem to be the automatic DLing of email images, as someone else mentioned in this thread.

It's definitely not the last. .93 is out there if you know where to look.

I upgraded Sunday. This is the first upgrade that I had any problem with.
Seemed to be going okay, then I got a "Fatal Error has occured while updating your device's software. Please try again." message. Phone had 507 error. Of course, I didn't notice the note in the instructions to just install again if I get that error so messed around with it for a couple hours, finally using JL Commander to wipe and was able to ultimately upgrade.
Just another reinforcement to read and follow instructions exactly and if things don't seem to go correctly, re-read the instructions again before you start trying everything else in the book.
Seems to be working great. Battery performance seems to be better than .55 was.
