Yes, that's normal. The device has to be reactivated after an oS upgrade.

Default xml file - 10-13-2008, 08:07 AM

I located the xml file in my PC. But there are 2, one is the vendor file and the other is a Device file. Do I delete both xml files or just the vendor xml ?

Once you delete the vendor.xml file, it becomes "generic".

Just the vendor.xml file, as the instructions above state.

Do you have a BlackBerry Data Plan on your device?

You need to call your carrier and subscribe to a BlackBerry Data Plan.

Default Just installed OS 4.5.0.108/4.5.0.81 on AT&T 8310 - 10-13-2008, 03:09 PM

I just wanted to make some comments about the OS 4.5 upgrade. I have a Red 8310 from AT&T that was my active phone, and a spare Titanium 8310. I upgraded the OS in my Titanium 8310 to the new 4.5 OS, and made that my active phone to make sure the upgrade went well, before I upgraded my newer Red 8310. That way...if I screwed something up on the Titanium, I can just pop the SIM back in the Red 8310 and I am back to normal.

So far, I have been running four days on the new OS 4.5.0.81 build and all is well. The phone seems to function a bit faster, love the HTML email, docs to go is great, and the browser and Video Camera feature are really nice function too.

I couple things I noticed, definitely not a complaint, but wanted to mention these items so everyone else who plans to upgrade, will be aware.

1. occasionally the message icon will not go away, even after you have opened all your email or text messages. a restart takes care of this.

2. the available space, seems to fluctuate at times, for not reason. After installing a 450K theme, the status screen indicated available space had dropped about 2MB not 450K. I am not too concerned about that, cause I have plenty of space left and I am sure that will be corrected once the AT&T version of the release is available.

3. the OS 4.5 upgraded apparently has fixed my Titanium 8310 from dropping the radio service (no calls could be received or placed) randomly. Which was a problem with my Ti version and that is how I ended up with the Red 8310 because of the problems with the Titanium. Anyway...again, the OS 4.5 upgrade has apparently fixed that problem.

4. the zoom function of the Video camera does not seem to work, but this is not a concern.

5. media on the microSD, definitely needs to repopulated on the microSD after the media card is reformatted using OS 4.5.

That's what I have noticed so far, again, not complaints, just passing the information along.

I expect that if my Titanium 8310 continues to be problem free by the end of the week, I will upgrade my Red 8310 over the weekend and make that one, again my active phone.

My two cents...

I am having trouble updating my red 8310.. I have done everything as told multiple times, but for some reason whenever I hook my phone into my comp, it never throws the "Upgrade" option prompt. I have tried going into both Apploader things to no prevail. Help please?

Are you saying that you had to reformat your microSD card for 4.5.0.81, or that you did the reformat with no ill effect?

My media card was formatted at the time it went into my Curve, and I have gone through two OS updates since then with no problems to the card.

If you have to reformat your SD card after an OS update, is there any improvement to the functionality of the card?

Thanks.

If you followed all the directions, the upgrade should go smooth. Just verify a couple of things:

1. Make sure you have upgraded to the latest version of BB Desktop software, 4.6 is what the version is now. Launch the BB Desktop software to confirm the version, while the application is open, disable SYNC DEVICE AUTOMATICALLY. If SYNC occurs while you are trying to upgrade, could cause issues.

2. After downloading the upgrade from the Rogers site, install the software on your desktop computer. Reboot the PC, and then delete the "vendor" file.
3. plug in your 8310 and wait to make sure the 8310 device is identified by your computer.
4. Launch the BB Desktop Software and once it does it's initial update checks, the message to update software should appear.

Let me know if I am crazy - when I follow the link to down load the 108/081 version, when I select the Blackberry Curve 8310 Smartphone option, this is software versions displayed:

Software For BlackBerry® Curve (TM) 8310 smartphone
BlackBerry Handheld Software v4.2.2.293 (Multilanguage)
Package Version: 4.2.2.293
Consisting of:
* Applications: 4.2.2.163
* Software Platform: 2.5.0.24
* File name: 8310M_PBr4.2.2_rel293_PL2.5.0.24_A4.2.2.163_Rogers _Wireless.exe
* File size: 78.55MB

Not the details above the link - as follows:
BlackBerry Handheld Software v4.5.0.108 (Multilanguage)
Package Version: 4.5.0.108
Consisting of:
* Applications: 4.5.0.81
* Software Platform: 2.7.0.78
* File name: 8310M_PBr4.5.0_rel108_PL2.7.0.78_A4.5.0.81_Rogers. exe
* File size: 75.77MB

Am I missing something?

@ both rojocrandall and philmccan,

I click the link in the first post, about 8-9 entries down is this choice:
BlackBerry® Curve (TM) 8310 smartphone

which takes me right to the .81 download screen, not the 4.2 as you posted.

There are THREE versions posted on that page, the 4.5 and the 4.2. You want the first, the 4.5

will a memory too low affect the operation of the phone as in battery drain and causing the phone to get hot?
