RIM Media Player app, OS 4.5: Is there any way to turn off the goofy music database stuff and just browse the SD card filesystem for songs?

Not sure what you mean there... do you mean when you are looking at the media card contents in with Desktop Manager/Roxio?

You can browse the media card with Windows when the BB is connected via USB and you have mass media mode enabled. Maybe that would help you?

When you open the media app...before you click on music/videos/ringtones/etc just press the menu button and click explore, you can then navigate and select songs/videos to play in the player.

Cool! How do I get it to advance to the next song in the directory once the current song is done playing?

If you want to play a folder when you are browsing, dont open de folder; instead select the folder and then click on the BB menu key and select Play subFolder
