You have to edit the blackberry.alx file. Read my post about optimizing your BB's memory. Its in my signature.

After trying these release out for a couple weeks I feel confident in saying that memory leaks are significantly improved over the .81. Other than that, I didn't noticed any other change or problems. Every other functions work as designed (camera, video, email, etc).

Right after upgrading my OS to 4.5.99 , I can no longer charge my device and it is almost dead , please help . Do I need to downgrade or is there a fix for this ? My device does however recognize the usb plug, but not a wall or car charger ?

Have you tried to pull the battery or reset using Alt + Right Shift + Del?

That's odd... tried a battery pull numerous times and nothing. Tried Alt+Right shift+ Del and now it works ! That is a mystery yet to be explained. Thank you for your quick and accurate reply.

This is the second time the Alt+Right Shift+Del fix something the battery pull didn't (the other case was a non-existing unread msg)... I guess it's a "stornger" reset... Good to know...

Uh oh - having an issue -
12-07-2008, 01:09 AM
Well, I thought I'd zip through this with no problems. Worst part is it's my wife's phone! I'm on the "Updating Your Device" screen and it whizzed through all the steps up to "Load JVM and System Software". It's now been hung up there for 30 minutes and the progress bar hasn't moved. The BB is dark (not a white screen) and doesn't respond to any buttons. Is this normal or did I f'up? I'm afraid to disconnect it. Appreciate the help!!
Update 1 Hr Later: There was no progress so I disconnected the unit. Got error msg on the Loader saying there was a communication error. BB won't turn on. I went to sleep to pray that the BB angels would fix it overnight.
Update 8 Hrs Later: I did a battery pull. BB won't turn on but LED blinks red with 2 quick blips every couple of seconds.
Any suggestions? Is this thing completely toast now?

Contrary to experiences of others, I'm having significant memory leaks with this version. I run a memory hog of a program, so i usually have around 19-20MB free. Since I updated to this version, I easily lose 3-6MB in one day. I just did the alt + right shift + del and regained at least 3MB just since this am. Any ideas?

I did it and all is going well so far, I had a few scares after I took out my battery and put my sim card that my phone wasn't turning on after I placed the battery back inside... turns out I just needed to press the power button ;)

yeh, I was wandering the exact same thing. Also, the .81 made my 8310 much slower, as it freezes all the time.. if anyone has any ideas, please let me know.
Thanks

URGENT! Newbie update ? -
12-08-2008, 01:11 PM
Hey all! I've read the entire thread here and am getting ready to install the new OS and have a question. I removed the vendor file and all. I have a couple of quesions.
1. However I am confused as to when it asks if I want to do a Device Backup. If I say yes, it has a warning that states: "After completing the loading operation, you must activate your device wirelesly to continue to send and receive messages and use other BlackBerry services."
As I don't use the BlackBerry Intenet Service or Messenger, so would that apply to me? (I use gmail and yahoo)
2. Should I not do a device backup? Will that matter?
3.I am running DM 4.6, will I need to update that as well?
Thanks,
~Jazzi~

I just loaded the 4.5xxx99 OS. This is an upgrade from 4.2. It was a piece of cake. I read everything then read it all again. Had to first upgrade to DM 4.7 first. Got a little nervous over the extra vendor.xml file so I deleted the DM and then re-installed but w/o the auto updates. The OS took less than 40 mins. No hang ups what so ever. I am very pleased with what I've seen so far of the new OS.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR EXCELLENT INSTRUCTIONS AND THANK YOU FOR THIS FORUM.
Best Regards,
Tim

This version is Multilanguage and contains English.
* Applications: 4.5.0.99
* Software Platform: 2.7.0.84
* File name: 8310M_PBr4.5.0_rel134_PL2.7.0.84_A4.5.0.99.exe
* File size: 76 MB
Download the file here:
Click!
Instructions for installing on ANY carrier's 8310:
1. Download the above OS file to the PC then install it to the PC by running (double clicking) the file you downloaded.
2. Go to c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader and delete the file named "vendor.xml."
3. Plug in BB and double click on "Loader.exe." It's located in the same place as the above vendor.xml file.
The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a white screen with an hourglass for up to 20 minutes at a time while the DM says "waiting for initialization."
If, for some reason, you end up with a white screen with small icons and the number 507, simply connect to the PC again and run Loader.exe again and it should load the OS to the device.

can i back up during the application loader set-up? or do I need to do it seperately before the upgrade process?

Help!! I have tried loading this a dozen times and managed to brick my phone in the process. It originally failed with a fatal error. I have since run JL Commander a few times to wipe it but now no matter how many times I run loader.exe it just goes immediately to a 507 after the first re-boot. I believe a 507 says it is ready to receive the OS. I have tried many times and it just won't get past this. If I try using DM and APP loader it doesn't seem to connect. At least it doesn't show any connected PIN.
Any suggestions?
edit...I tried 7 or 8 more times and on about the 20th attempt it appears to be loading this time. (I wasn't using a hub either. It was always directly connected to a USB port)

For some reason it seems my phone has problems with GPS now. I attempt to have the phone to get its location and it does not get it it give me a latitude and longitude of 00000000
Most of my apps that want to use the GPS are not working either, I have reinstalled the apps. Everything worked fine with the previous OS.
Hi,

Got New OS, able to video, unable to open on pc -
01-12-2009, 04:07 PM
I hope it is okay that I post this in this thread as I couldn't find where else to post.
I took my first video with the new OS. Great. I can watch it on my BB. I sent it via blue tooth to my laptop, but am unable to open it. Is there some kind of converter I need in order to view the fie? I would like to email to the people I took the video of but of course, they won't be able to open it either.
Thank you!
