Smile Just ordered my first Blackberry!

Please Login to Remove!

hello all. i just ordered my first ever blackberry and can't wait to get it. i purchased the vzw 8330 curve. i only recently started reading these forums, but it seems there is a wealth of information here, which brought me a lot of comfort in getting a bb.

one question i have right now is what do people on here suggest as the first things to do after taking it out of the box? i would guess making sure I have the latest software version before i do any application downloads, since i've read people having issues with retaining applications upon upgrading os. any other ideas for important things to do right away?

thanks.

Wirelessly posted (Verizon 8830)

There is a stickie at the top of page with latest OS. Also take the time to check out the BBFAQ section

The first thing you should do isprovision the device with your carrier and add a BB data plan. Then read the user guide and the FAQ here. The start using it. Set up a couple email accounts, start surfing, etc. Get to know what it can and cannot do.

I would not recommend trying to upgrade the OS until you are familiar with the device and are comfortable with it. You can very easily turn it into a brick if you aren't careful. Plus, if it works for you then there is no reason to try to fix it with a software/OS update.

Thanks all. I only mentioned the OS update because I wanted to make sure the GPS would work with BB maps. I read on here that it was unlocked by Verizon with the most recent update.

Don't have high expectations for BBMaps, GoogleMaps or any map application on a cell device. there just isn't enough screen real estate or processing power to match the stand alone versions. If you plan on using it for directions, etc, I would recommend getting one of the stand alone GPS units by Garmin, Magellan, etc. Prices are pretty good now also!

Default Congrats

Congrats on your purchase. I just received my new VZW BlackBerry Curve 8330 last Friday. Mine came with the 4.5 OS, so you should be fine. You will love the phone. I previously had a RAZR v3m and there is just no comparison.

Also, you will finds tons of data on this forum. Have fun with your new toy!!

Do I have to upgrade the OS for the GPS to work properly? I just got this 8330 a few weeks ago and the OS is 4.3.0.127.

And, do I have to backup everything I already have on here before upgrading the OS?

I'm read from others here that you should backup apps before doing upgrade. You can find instructions on how to backup apps at blackberryfaq.com. I'd post a link, but I can't yet...
