8350i Text Messaging Help
 

I tested my new phone with a few texts to my sister-in-law today. She claims when I replied to her messages, the original message was sent as well and counted as two text messages on her phone. Is this correct? Never heard of this and if so, is there a way to turn it off?

...you're probably replying to her using MMS from your 8350i... you will need to actually delete the original message to reduce the message size. . .

So instead of easily hitting reply, I need to go to contact list and send mms from there?

It may be doing that already, replying using MMS... that's why she's getting the Original Message back with your reply. Make sure that your SMS is working...

Yeah I'm simply replying to her text message, so by default your saying it is replying with a mms. Sorry just trying to wrap my brain around it

I heard Nextel is doing away with the SMS texting and going to MMS. all of their new phones are to be using MMS. I do not know why. they also said it will show up on some other carriers phones as a multi media message.

For some reason, when I flopped over some 7100i users to 8350i yesterday, I did see that there was SMS item in the Options list but really didnt pay attention to it as none of those users were using it. I'll probably look more into it when I get to the rest of the devices next week. . . but it does make sense that Original Message gets included in replies when sent via MMS.

I have no problem with original message showing, I'm just confused as to why it would be charged to the recipient as two text messages.

I spoke with BB Support and explained that in reading the PDF manual on page 38 I believe it shows the SMS text option. That is not the case. The BB 8350i is MMS. To get the text message to show in your messages folder you have to go through your message folders and choose

1. Options
2. General Options

3."SMS and E-Mail Boxes" - Combined

You have to purge both boxes and then you will have your SMS "MMS" messages come to that box. They stated that Sprint uses SMS but Nextel uses MMS. When I questioned if people had to type in a different address than our number to send a text I was told no. Hopefully I've provided some help or relief as I was confused for much of the day when speaking with several BB support reps.

OK, so....if I'm not mistaken, we still haven't resolved the initial problem: How do we/I stop having 2 texts sent to people at the same time?

the Original Message sent with the reply can possibly be increasing the number of characters of the message from the conventional 160 per SMS...essentially, a MMS message with 165 characters, which includes the original message, is counted as 2 SMS messages. . .

Was thinking the same thing.

But is there even an option to NOT send the original message in a reply? If there is, I seem to be missing it.

U need to actually hi-lite the entire original msg, delete it, then send. Should fix your problem. Try it!

There has got to be an easier way tho... Definitely an unneeded, extra step. Altho its easy enough to do, so there ya go!! Hope this helps..

Yeah, for now it will work. But yer right, there HAS to be an easier way...or they have to put it in there.

Now, as a BB newbie, I need to figure out how to highlight text on this thing.

Hold the shift button down (lower left corner) and scroll over text w/track ball...

Or you can open the text msg, press menu>reply>menu>remove history then type your text before sending. Not too hard if done this way with a little practice.

I believe you are referring to "Clear Field", right?

Yes, that works, too...probably a bit easier than highlighting and deleting.
