Default GPS question

Please Login to Remove!

I have a Curve 8330 with verizon (v4.5.0.77) and was told the GPS is now unlocked. However mine wont work. When I go to Options>advanced>GPS on the GPS source I have "device GPS" and "Blackberry 8130" I dont have a 8130 (pearl) I have the 8330 (curve). Is this why mine is not working? if so how do I fix it?

GPS now comes functional with v4.5.0.77 for BlackBerry Maps ONLY. Verizon has a block on GPS usage for 3rd party apps (such as GPSed, Google Maps, etc.). Google Maps might APPEAR to have a functional GPS, but it merely ROUGHLY finds your location via triangular tower location.

To get full GPS usage out of your BlackBerry, you'd either need to subsribe to VZ Navigator or purchase an external GPS device that can work with your BB. Personally, I'm not willing to spend $10/month on VZ Navigator nor am I thrilled about lugging around an external GPS. That being said, BlackBerry Maps does everything I need it to. You can even send directions you've looked up to others via SMS, MMS, or e-mail. It's pretty nifty.

I was just busted on another thread for telling people this. Verizon has very recently changed things around and no longer restricts their GPS to BBM. You may wish to bone up on your VZW news.

This may be seeing an 8130 over bluetooth?

If you go into BB Maps and select "locate me" does it indicate it's looking for satellites or not?

Your options>advanced>gps should say;

GPS Data Source: Device GPS
GPS Services: Location On

CO_BB: where did you find this news? this is the first i've heard of this. so you're telling me that Google Maps now users GPS location? I just did a "My Location" and it still only found me within a couple thousand meters. Also, last night I was trying to get GPSed to work on my phone. The GPS function would not connect with the app.

you can get GPS, but only with BB maps (last I checked) When I try it searches for sat, but never finds anything (outside or inside) then it finally errors out and wont let me search again without a battery pull

Again, I refer you to the thread link above. Until yesterday I stood firm with this same assessment.

you know, i came across this thread last night, but must not have read it all the way through. even though you were "hammered" in that post, there were still a few who were on your side in that GPS thru verizon phones doesn't work on ALL apps yet. regardless of where the issue lies (with verizon or google), the fact remains that GPS does not work through Google Maps (what most of us are concerned about).

i refuse to pay for a GPS service (telenav, VZ nav), so i might give nav4all or amAze a try and see how that compares to blackberry maps. perhaps those apps have beaten google to the punch of being capable of utilizing verizon's supposedly lifted GPS block. i'll keep everyone posted....

I just find it odd that people are saying that Google Maps needs an update when it works fine with all the other models on the other carriers. I'd suggest it's still a VZW block or impediment of some kind that's preventing it. I believe Dawg to be a VZW insider and trust his information the most... he was the one who made me feel the best about at least trying to stick to my guns... LOL

i totally agree with you. since when has google been behind in anything? why would they put their brand name on the chopping block and drag their feet on this issue? i think verizon and RIM came to a compromise and allowed GPS functionality on BB Maps, but nothing else (as of yet).

update: i downloaded Nav4All. the website says it's only available free-of-charge until Jan 1 of next year. i'm assuming after that, there will be a steep one-time charge or a monthly charge similar to VZ navigator. after installing, i received the following errors: when i clicked "where is my location", there was "no GPS location." when i tried to set up GPS, "no bluetooth GPS sensor found." it seems to me that the only way i have a prayer of getting this to work is to purchase an external GPS, which then leads me to believe that this is still due to Verizon's block. i've deleted this application.

next: amAze. after numerous tries, i FINALLY was able to download the program and get it on my phone. very slow program as well. also, couldn't get GPS to connect. again, i've deleted this application.

i've given up. i'm sticking with BB maps and Google maps until further notice!

Ok, so according to this link looks like VZW has unlocked GPS a little bit more..

Does anyone have a list of what works and doesn't work with VZW GPS?

I'm looking for an app that will track my running.. Sanoodi doesn't seem to work yet, it just hangs and I have to do a battery pull to stop it.

CO_BBTechie, I saw that thread where you were "hammered". I can confirm GPS does not work with Google Maps on my 8330. My Location on Google Maps is still using triangulation and it places me 8 miles from my real location when I'm at home, just as it always has since I first installed it.

I was wondering if maybe VZW unlocked GPS completely just for the Storm.

daphne: good thought on the VZW--->Storm link...this could very well be the case. it will be interesting to hear what others have to say about this.

just to make sure my current google maps situation was still the same, i uninstalled, hard-rebooted, and re-installed google maps. sure enough, it's still picking up my location via triangulation. when running the program, one thing i did notice was this: when i first opened google maps and tried going to "my location," it had a message that read "your location within 5,000 meters. waiting for GPS." nothing happens from that point. seems like google is up to speed on GPS, but it cannot get past verizon's block

RIM makes it very clear in their developer knowledge base:

"Verizon does not support the Standalone mode. For BlackBerry Device Software 4.7 and later, Standalone mode is open to applications that are signed by Research In Motion."

For GPS using other modes:

"Verizon requires third-party applications to have a valid Client ID and Password for their Location Proxy Server (LPS) to access the Location API. To obtain these credentials, contact Verizon. Verizon credentials can be set in an application by calling GPSSettings.setPDEInfo(String ip, int port) as follows: GPSSettings.setPDEInfo(";"+clientID+";"+password, 0);"

Yes, Verizon charges developers for the credentials.

Wirelessly posted

CO_BB: perhaps you should "re-hammer" those who slammed you in your previous post!

I'm sure you already know but just in case, AT&T + BB Curve + Google Maps works greats. It takes about 5 or 10 seconds after I click the icon but then I get the message, "Accurate to 3 meters" and I tried it just walking around a bit and I can zoom in and see my every movement.

Might be worth switching carriers?
