is there an options icon? -if so what does it look like?

apparently I can find out what OS version I have through it. - does the BB update automatically or do i have to do something complicated?

Welcome to the forums.

The icon will be different depending on your theme. Try looking for a wrench icon.

You can get your OS version by press the Alt, right caps key and H keys simultaneously.

You can also get it by composing a new email and typing myver.

You would manually have to upgrade your OS. You can do so by following these steps.
