Default 8330 8GB Media Card Problems

Please Login to Remove!

I have a problem with my Sprint 8330 regarding the use of 8GB media cards. I have the 4.5.0.131 (188) software installed on the phone, which should allow the use of up to a 16GB card. A week ago a received a Transcend 8BG microSDHC (Class 6) from NewEgg. When I replaced the 1GB card in the phone with the 8GB Transcend, it would display that it could not read from the card, and that I should format it. When I tried to format the card, I would always receive a message that the format failed. I inserted the microSD card into the SD adapter furnished by Transcend and plugged it into a USB card reader attached to my computer. The computer would not even recognize that the card was present, yet when I plugged the 1GB card that came with the phone into the adapter and inserted into the card reader, the computer instantly recognized the card and showed all the files on it. I concluded that the Transcend card was defective and returned it to NewEgg for a refund.

I purchase a second 8GB microSDHC card from an online vendor. I orderd a SanDisk exactly like the one shown on the BlackBerry accessories website for my 8330. I received it today, and plugged it into my phone. The phone recognized that I had inserted a new media card, and asked me to format it. When I try to format the card, the phone freezes up on the media card screen and none of the keys will work. I have to do a battery pull to restart the phone. My USB card reader will not recognize the SanDisk card either, so I cannot format the card on the computer (this appears to be a problem with the card reader).

I am open for any suggestions or advice as to what to do next.

It can take a minute or two for the format to finish. If you pulled the battery during the format and before it was done you may have messed up the formatting or the card.

I left it on the frozen screen for at least 20 minutes before I pulled the battery. Also, when I formatted the 1GB card that came with the phone, a progress bar appeared on the screen. No such bar appears when my phone freezes up.

No, 20 minutes is not normal. It seems strange to get two bad cards. I would, as you have, suspect something wrong with the device.

It appears that the phone cannot handle an 8GB card, even though it is supposed to.

Any device with OS 4.3 or higher supports 8Gb cards.

Another question: Does your computer's SD reader support cards of this size? I don't think your first card was bad, your reader just couldn't recongnize it. I like sandisk readers because their firmware is upgradable to support new formats/capacities.

Good point. Many card readers don't read the sdhc cards.

I have a SanDisk Imagemate 6 in 1 reader that is at least 4 years old - I didn't know the firmware could be upgraded. This still doesn't explain why my phone cannot format either one of the cards.

I tried using both the SanDisk and Transcend cards in my wife's Samsung Instinct phone, which is supposed to accept 8GB microSD cards. Her phone would not recognize either one of them, giving a message that the card was inserted incorrectly. It is possible that both cards are bad?

i was under the impression that 4.5.0.131 would only read an 8GB card. Am i not understanding the following the chart correctly?

My phone software is above the '081 software, which means that it can handle up to a 16GB microSDHC card. But I'm trying to get 8GB cards to work.

Cool 8GB Microsdhc card in 8330

Me and my husband both have 8330 and today purchased two 8 GB microsdhc cards, 8330 had no problem recognizing the cards (showed 7.3 gb available) they are running perfectly. Just to let those out there know, I called Sprint and a Sprint store to see what capacity of a card the 8330 could handle and both told me only a 4 gb. WOW!!! They need new training I think. LOL Anyway, it depends on the OS. 4.3 can handle up to an 8 GB and 4.5 can handle up to a 16 GB. I don't know what is going on with your two cards, I wouldn't assume that it's the card since your wife's instinct won't read it (it can only handle up to a 4gb from what I am told). I bought our cards at a Radioshack here locally for $19.99 (normally $54.99) I would suggest that since you bought both cards online to try a local retailer that you can easily return it to if theirs doesn't work either. Good Luck.

Did you have to format the cards in your in your BlackBerry phones before they would work, or did they just show up as available? As to my wife's Samsung Instinct, the manual says it can can handle up to an 8GB card, but it only came with a 2 GB card.

That is my problem. My phone recognizes the new media cars, and tells me to format it. With the SanDisk card, the phone freezes up during the format process and never completes the format. With the Transcend card, the phone tries to format the card, but the format operation always fails (I get a message to that effect).

What brand and type of card are you using? You have the exact phone that I am having problems with.

The brand I use is scandisk. Did you buy these cards from an eBay seller? I had a problem a while back, the cards I bought were fake. I lost a lot of mp3's on them. Now I check them out before I move any file on it.

Its Sandisk. Not Scandisk.
