Default Anybody else having a battery die prematurely?

Please Login to Remove!

I have the original Curve that came out for Cingular/AT&T - 8310, I think. I've had it for 2.5 years and it's been great. I've noticed this past week, though, that the battery will die prematurely. I'll be using it for either Internet or something else, and the battery life will indicate 1/2 full. The screen will go blank and die. If I pop the battery out/in, it'll then say low battery/radio off and the screen will die. I NEVER got any indication that the battery was anywhere near dead (again, the meter said about 1/2 remaining).

If I recharge it, it'll take a second to kick back up, and then will show about 1/2 remaining while it starts to recharge.

Has anybody else have this type of problem? Is it some sort of memory effect? I usually use my phone completely before recharging, so I don't think I've abused it or anything. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Anyone? Bueller?

Seriously, is there anything I can do besides buying a new battery? Could it be due to not having the latest OS, etc?

Thanks.

Try cleaning the contacts, on both the battery and the BlackBerry. It could also be your charger, which would be less expensive to replace. Do you have access to a differernt charger to try and do some troubleshooting?

2 1/2 years for a Lithium-ion Battery is a long lifetime. Their normal life expectancy is about 1 year. There is no memory effect with Lithium-ion Batteries.
You'll have a surface charge with no load, which may indicate 1/2 scale. As soon as there is a load (transmitting or working the CPU), there's maybe enough drop, to shut-down your phone.
I believe you can purchase a new Battery for around $20 USD..

ksnwireless is right- There is no power loss on a litium ion battery. It will put out the rated voltage until there is none left. Unlike NiCads that lower the power down as it looses it's juice. NiMH are similar to Litium Ion as they are more prone to failure to due heat and cold.

As far as the life of your battery the litium ion can only take som many charged. They do not get a memory. So if they are not lasting daily run cycle of the specs of the phone you need to replace the battery. You got a full extra year than most batteries.

Ok, I'm wondering if it's a hardware or software issue instead of the battery. When my phone is plugged into the charger, everything works fine. When it's not, it will go black screen dead within a few minutes of use. It could be from using the phone or surfing the Internet. The call quality has become terrible, too - if I'm talking and the phone is uploading/downloading email, etc., I can REALLY hear a static screech.

Is it possible it's a s/w issue (e.g. I need a new OS update)? Or is it more likely a hardware issue (again, it's always been housed in a case and hasn't been dropped). Whenever the phone dies, if I plug it back in, it'll reboot and show the battery life as fine (usually around 50%).

Does this mean it's not a battery problem, but something else instead? Thanks.

Sorry, one more thing. My OS version is v4.2.2.89 (Platform 2.4.0.39). I see the latest available is 4.5.0.152.

Could this be the cause of my problem? Good idea to upgrade to this version? Thanks.

It's unlikely that an OS that has caused problems for this long all of a sudden makes your battery go dead. As others have stated, sounds like you need a new battery. Or the phone could just be dying.

Default Same Problem! Thanks for the fix!

Hey! I'm having this exact same problem. I guess it's time to go get a new battery.

I was wondering why the phone would die when I was using Pandora and would check my facebook...
