Maybe I have become like that kid in Heroes who can talk to technology, but any help or advice would be very, very appreciated.

I don't think this has anything to do with your upgrade. The symptoms that you describe are typically caused by exposure to moisture or liquid. Did the phone get wet or damp? They are especially sensitive in the trackball area as it's almost a direct path to the circuit board.
