Uppercase EDGE means you are connected to the Blackberry service, lowercase means your not (same thing with gprs/GPRS). I'm having this problem right now with an 8310 on T-Mobile but my problem i suspect is different than yours.
Have you tried the following?
- Resending service books from the BIS site (where you created your email)?
- Gone to Options/Advanced Options/Host Routing Table, press the ball and clicked "Register Now?"
- Pulled the battery and reset your blackberry since you've talked to AT&T?
- Checked the APN settings (Options/Advanced Options/TCP) for your carrier?
Make sure (though I know you said AT&T already said your good) that you have BlackBerry service and not medianet or some unlimited internet on your account. Since you had a working blackberry on your account before though, it sounds like you do.
If your APN settings do not start with WAP@CINGULAR you'll need to google your TCP settings (since I can't post a link with having under 10 posts) and find the settings for AT&T and put them in that screen. If you google "WAP@CINGULAR" you should find what your looking for.
