Default track ball issue

Please Login to Remove!

hey all,

my curve's trackball is shot, or rather the thing on the board below the trackball is shot...it has no play to it, just flat or even indented into the board. I have two pearl's i can use as spare parts, and both of their "thingies under the trackball" are working fine. Can I take one off of a pearl and replace the one on the curve? if so, how?

many thanks,
drew

No you can't because the parts below the trackball are part of the actual board on the BB's chassis. The ones from the pearls wouldn't work because they are completely different and I think are incorporated on the logic board.

Thanks Sytner. Any knowledge of what my options are for fixing this then?

I would recommend looking for a broken "spares or repair" BlackBerry on ebay for a start and then you could disassemble it for parts. That's a good cheap option. As for ease of disassembly; they come apart fairly easily and there are many youtube videos that can show how to.

Default Solution to my problem

Sytner,

I have figured out the problem with my trackball and am posting it here for posterity.

What I was experiencing was the trackball had no "clickability"...it would not click, just sat in its proper place beneath the silver ring. It rolled eratically and would select things seemingly at random (open an email message or application when I did not intend to).

Further investigation led me to read this thread:

{sorry, can't post link b/c I have to have a thread count above 10. but search these boards for "select button gone crazy!"}

Although this did not address the issue, the pdf referenced in the thread gave a step by step visual tutorial for opening and cleaning the contacts below the trackball. Part of the procedure involves lifting up the tiny, square piece of copper tape that sits just below the trackball, on the board. So I took my trackball back out to clean it, and opened a spare pearl for visual comparison. When I looked at the two it was clear that the Curve was *missing* that small piece of tape. When I lifted the small piece of tape on the Pearl, I saw that on the underside of the tape is a little hollow, hemisphere...a cup. That is the cup that clicks. It was missing on my Curve (which I bought off of someone on Craigslist).

Placing the Pearl's tape and cup on the Curve, putting the trackball back, then the ring, fixed my phone. Works perfectly now!

Thanks for your help,
Drew
