Default Standby Mode Makes No Sense

I'm new to the BB and I've done much surfing, and I can't find exactly how "standby" mode saves battery power. It still searches for e-mail, phone calls, bb msgr, e-mail, text, etc. So why even bother to put it into standby, just wait a few seconds and the screen will turn off ?

Wirelessly posted (8820 on WiFi)

It helps as it prevents the screen coming on when buttons are pressed inadvertantly (e.g in a pocket) and it sometimes disables the status LED in order to conserve power.

The BB doesn't search for email. It's push.
