Default new set-up; unrecognized

I have a new Verizon 8330 and need to sync it to Outlook for my calendar and contacts. I have followed all the directions and the phone was recognized at the USB before installing the Desktop Software (v4.5) but has never been recognized again by either the computer or the software after install. I have hard booted the phone, re-installed the software, and removed the RIM entries from the registry. Three times.

A thumb drive works fine in that port. (1) Port is OK
Phone charges by USB cable (2) USB is OK

The only hardware anomaly that I can find is that Blackberry Device Manager shows Com 3 "disabled" and Windows XP Device Manager shows the RIM Virtual Serial Port v2 on both Com 4 and Com 5.

I'm pretty frustrated by the total lack of customer support at Blackberry and the circular logic of the help screens.

Anyone have any ideas?
