Default Stubborn Track Ball

Please Login to Remove!

I havent had this 8330 for a year yet. The track ball is smooth now and it also sticks. The ball still rolls but it doesnt make proper contact with the sensor behind it. Anyhow the ball is tought to move and I sometimes click it trying to roll it. Is there a simple fix for this or do I have to shell out cash for a replacement?

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry Curve 8900)

What I do when my trackball acts up is take something like a wet nap and roll the ball in all different directions. What I actually use are those wipes that are used for LCD screens. They seem to work well for me.

As noted above, it sounds like it just needs a cleaning to
me...

If it sticks, there might be some dust trapped underneath. I've had my trackball stick a few times, I just roll it back and forth furiously and it usually dislodges whatever was stuck in the first place.

Generally you should be able to resolve the issue with simple cleaning. Otherwise trackball replacements are pretty cheap.

I remove my battery, then press down the ball and then roll it in all directions for about 30 seconds. That normally gets it back in great shape.

Thanks for the tips everyone. I didnt know you could actually replace the ball itself though. Where would I go and what would I do? I mean can I order the ball by itself? Plus, im affraid I could ruin it trying to replace it. Thanks again everyone.

Check site sponsor Horizon Wireless. The instructions for cleaning/replacing are on this site I believe...

Yup it's relatively easy. When you order the replacement it's basically the entire trackball unit and maybe the chrome bezel as well. The bezel is held down by three prongs (located at 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions). You want to gently pry it off at the 12O'clock position. Once removed, you can just remove the trackball unit, pop the new one in and put the bezel back in place.

This happens to me sometimes as well, I first had it happen right after I was in a dusty construction environment, so what I did was use a can of air and blew it directly at the center of the trackball, you'll actually see it bounce around a little as the air goes around it in different directions. Usually solves it for me.

Default What I did a few days ago

I have the same problem every couple of months. Dirt in the trackball making it only work in 3 directions. Most of the time removing the battery and then pushing the trackball while rolling it solves the problem.

Earlier this week this did not solve it so I just removed the trackball and cleaned it under the tap. Let the water hit the trackball as hard as it can. (Blow)dry the trackball and put it back into the handheld. Works prefectly!
