Default blackberry curve 8310 ''907 invalid COD TCP read timed out''

i brought a blackberry curve 8310 off a friend of mine today and i'm currently trying to download the latest blackberry messenger but when it's downloading a message pops up saying it's failed and '907 invalid COD TCP read timed out'
it also said this when i tried downloading a twitter application.
i've read through things online and none of them have solved this problem, i did a huge update of everything with the desktop manager so everything *should* be upto date.
i'd be really greatful if someone could help me out here as i'm new to blackberrys!

Are you using the BB browser? Is emulation set to IE?

Have you tried a battery pull?

What OS is on the device?

Did you try a Google Search?
