Default Help! Crazy Data usage spike

Please Login to Remove!

I've had this Curve for over a year. My plan originally included 5MB of data which has always been just enough. I would go over by a bit here and then, but we're talking about $5 worth of going over. My average usage was about 5.4MB steadily.

Out of the blue about a month ago my phone started doing weird things. I would get my emails twice, then not at all for almost an entire day, then they would all show up in multiples the following morning. Couple hours later my phone was disconnected. I called telus and they told me the account was shut down due to an extreme data over use. I haven't been receiving or sending any more emails then usual, haven't gotten any extra large attachments, but all of a sudden my data use surged up to some 65MB.

Long story short my plan was updated to include 500MB and I was told the charges were supposed to be dropped. When I was talking to the tech he couldn't figure out what could be going on with the BB and suggested I update to a new software version and that this could have been the issue.

I got my next statement and the data usage has now skyrocketed to 189MB! I also got charged some $900 worth of data usage even though the plan was supposedly upgraded. I haven't changed my habits in how I use the phone. I almost NEVER surf the net, I don't use it for anything other then checking my email and occasionally FBook.. I don't receive large attachments, I've gone through my inbox and added up all the attachments I have received on my computer and they total at most 30MB worth of data...

I will be on the phone with Telus again, but WTF is going on??

List for us all of the third-party applications you have installed on your device.

Also, Facebook is a push application, which means it uses data constantly, even when you aren't actively using it.

The only apps running on my phone right now are FB which I have had as long as I have had the phone, and The Weather Network. I can imagine that they use up some data getting their info but 185MB worth of??

I don't know if 185MB is all that much for an entire month's usage of push applications.
I have users with 2 or 3 apps that routinely break 800-900MB in a month, with average email delivery.

We all have unlimited data plans here, so it's usually not any concern for us.
Does your carrier not offer an unlimited plan?

Well for comparison my bf has the same phone, with the same weather app plus a few others and he surfs a lot more then I do and he goes through about 40-50MB on a monthly basis. Hence I don't see how that one new app is at fault here.

I don't want to just get a bigger plan. I want an explanation on how on earth does my data usage surge from the 5MB per month it has steadily been at for a year to 70MB in one month and up to 180MB the following month without me doing anything out of the normal or changing any of my phone usage habits. Did my phone get hacked some how and some one is stealing the data?? Is my phone broken and is requesting the same information repeatedly? Something is very fishy here and I don't want to just sweep the problem under the rug by paying for data usage I can't even account for.

Has to be some apps running in the background or someone has their wires and electrons crossed and is charging your plan.

I stopped using Facebook, but I thought it runs in the background, constantly checking for messages. Well, unless you completely log out.

No one is likely to be able to diagnose the source over the forum, so why not try pulling it and the weather app off to see? Does Telus have a website where you can track usage during the month or do you have to wait until the end of the month?

No. You can log into FB app. You can remain logged in and close it.
It does nothing until you open it.
By being logged in, EMAILS for facebook, get intercepted by the app, and you get the notification. The app doesnt need to be running in the background to do this.

FB app will only load the notification, once you click on, at which point it starts retriveing and refreshing feeds, messages, friends list etc.
If you've closed it, but still logged in, it does NOT use data.

Oh I guess it just seemed like an obnoxious stream of updates and messages. (All of extreme importance).

But yeah, I re-installed, and seems to be zero data flow even if the app shows in the background. Although I unchecked those 3 options on connecting Calendar, Message, and Contacts with Facebook.

So back to the OP, try to wipe the OS and reinstall then. If you insist it's not the apps, then get down to no additional apps and find out. For all we know, maybe your neighbor is tethering to your phone at night over bluetooth and browsing the web.

Does your billing statement show day-by-day data useage? My thought is take a look at that for clues. Is it more or less steady each day, or do you see particular days where there's a huge amount of data useage? I'm not sure exactly what that will tell you, but maybe some clues. I think it would be very interesting if it isn't spread evenly, and if there's a pattern. It might make you think of something you missed or haven't considered yet.

Seems unlikely that there's "wires crossed" somewhere, but I really have no idea. If you can relate daily data useage to days you know for certain what you were doing with the blackberry you might figure something out along those lines.

Wirelessly posted (8820)

Also, I would enable the password on your blackberry if you haven't done it already, and use it.
