You define what is level 1. I guess by default PIN messages are set as level 1, but you can change that. But more importantly, you can use BIS filters to define messages from certain addresses or domains as level 1. So you might set any email from anyone from your company or employer as level 1, or your children, your spouse...whatever you choose to do.

And, yes, BBM uses PIN, just it's a different user interface.

No. BBM uses the PIN infrastructure for message delivery but a PIN message is not a BBM message. PIN's show up under Messages only.

Again, you've got it logically backwards. PIN messages can be made Level 1. That doesn't mean that Level 1 messages are all PIN's (unless you only have PIN's set as Level 1).

Log into your carrier's BIS and click on the Filter icon. Create a new filter and you'll see all the filtering options as well as the toggle box to enable Level 1 notification for the new filter. As aiharkness said, Level 1 messages are whatever you designate as Level 1. On BES you have a few more options for what can be designated as Level 1.

Because that's how you have your profile set up.
You can edit your profiles to do anything you want.

That's all there is to it. It is that simple. Pick a tone or tone/vibration, etc, for Level 1 messages, and any message from any address, and pin and BBM if you decide, will alert with that profile depending on your Level 1 criteria as explained above.

You're sure you don't have the same alert tone for anything else in your active profile?

You've confused me. I thought you were saying you didn't understand the concept or use of Level 1, or you expected something more from level 1 notification than just a ring tone. But now you are saying the level 1 alert is not occuring for you when you think it is supposed to occur? Is that the issue you are having?

aiharkness, I think the OP is saying level 1 message tone DOES occur, but there are no level 1 messages of any kind.

Ok... Rereading the first post with that thought, I agree, but I don't understand. An alert, level 1 or otherwise, without a message or calendar or task event of some sort? I don't get it. If that's happening, I'm stumped.

If you're not getting any new messages when you hear the Level 1 alert I'd suggest setting the Level 1 alert to mute or to an entirely different tone until you figure out what's triggering the alert. If the alerts cease then you have a problem that I have no idea how to deal with (maybe a battery pull to start).

You're not running Twitterberry in the background, are you? I was going nuts trying to figure out why my phone kept going off when I hadn't gotten a new phone call or message, as far as I could tell. The problem was that I had Twitterberry open in the background (click the berry button, then Switch Application to see what programs are open) and every time a new tweet posted my phone went off. There isn't some sort of obvious notifier icon on the home screen.

There's a good thought.... There are other apps, too, with profile capability that do not put a notifier icon on the screen.
