Is there anyway I can shut off the email alert and the text I get telling me I received a email? I get some spam email and it drives me crazy hearing this thing all the time. Would like to get it to where I still receive email but don't get any noises or vibrating out of it when it happens. Phone is a 8330 on Sprint.

Go to your profiles and edit the alert settings there. For that email address, set the alert to MUTE.

Also, you might want to log into your BIS from a computer and setup filters to prevent those SPAM messages from being pushed to the device.

Alright got the alert shut off for the email which is nice. One other question I have though... am I able to shut off the little notification thing on the home screen deal for email but still have it show up for sms/text? I saw the option to shut it off but I want to have it available for text/sms and not have it show up for new emails.

Messages > Menu > Options > General Options > Display New Message Indicator > Yes/No

But this will control both SMS and Email notifications. I do not believe you can control them individually.

You can manually attempt to filter spam but it's really best to filter before the email even reaches BIS.

Yes, agreed. But my experience has been that messages that are identified as SPAM in Outlook still make it to the BlackBerry. And not all ISPs have good SPAM filtering at the server level so it's more difficult for the user to control it at that level.
